DBZ: The adventures of the adult Goku who, along with his companions (Z-Fighters), defends the earth against an assortment of villains ranging from intergalactic space fighters and conquerors, unnaturally powerful androids and nearly indestructible magical creatures? xD
Personally, I didn't feel that it was the plot itself that made DBZ so great. It was the emotion and action within it. I haven't seen any other anime capture sadness and anger the way it did for Goku when he transformed into a Super Saiyan for the very first time. Naruto, which looks up to DBZ, attempts to capture the same emotion in both Naruto and Sasuke, but it's just not as intense to me. Same with Gohan when turning Super Saiyan 2 (that one was pretty brief though).
It makes it sound pretty cool but storywise DBZ is quite simple and the same trend is used across the whole thing.
DBZ did had its emotional moments in it but for me it was kinda destroyed by the fact that the good guys could be revived at any time. The Dragon Balls were kind of a Deus Ex Machina that were used to undo deaths that really made striking impacts on the series, and this wouldn't be a big deal if it were the one-off use that was expressed in the first part of DB but then they go on to find loopholes with the Namek Dragon Balls and such that really makes it as if nobody dying really makes a difference because you know they will come back for a fact.
For me, when it comes to emotional tragedies, Gurren Lagann and Code Geass were the most striking. Not only because those had some of the most heartbreaking deaths ever, but also because you knew for a fact that those characters were gone for good, never to come back again. In particular it's heartbreaking with Code Geass because the main character adjusted to a pretty average yet nice life following the turmoil he went through in his childhood, and his pursuit of his goals ultimately resulted in many tragedies and the way it shattered the happiness he had found in life was very sad to see.
