Doesn't Understand why people continue to harp on a show that was COMPLETED IN 1994. It pretty much give birth to most of the manga/anime you watch now. Of course there were shows that DBZ followed but seriously the show officially ended 18 yrs ago.

first of all,let me break some good news to the creator of this thread!

you are drunk,my brother!

first question i would ask you why would you compare dbz and naruto?...

dbz was released in a time anime/manga wasn't as popular as it is today!
sure the storyline of dbz isn't that great, but it was so popular that it took anime media to another level!the story was simple, and sure it was nothing more than a fight of good and evil, but it captured millions of hearts!

naruto was released in a completely different timeline and the storyline was properly planned and every small detail was properly dealt with!thatz why you find the story of naruto much more interesting!hell that does not make dbz any less legendary!dbz is one of the greatest anime and will remain so for a long time.

Remember dbz is one of the reasons anime media is what it is today!

IMO i have to agree somewhat but it is one of the 1st anime/manga of its Genre that started many other animes/mangas(great ones).

Its only Natural if creators down the road have better work after all they look at DBZ and try to top it. DBZ is a stepping stone or a guide as what to do and how to improve on it.

look at FF7 when it 1st came out...ppl were raging *BEST FF GAME EVERZ* I look back at it the graphics is....the amount of emoness and compare it to rpgs now...it was good at its time hell epic...but now....

AT the Time DBZ/etc is one of the best animes/manga if not the best ever created at the time... to say it sucks now to me don't feel right and to say its the best don't feel right...its a Classic and started a mainstream of goodness to follow.
I hope someone understands what im trying to say its kinda hard to put it in words.

So I used to watch DBZ when I was younger and thought it was the best thing ever(who on here didnt); but looking back I realize its probably one of the worst animes ever made. Horrible story line and no character development whatsoever.

I mean practically all the main villains (frieza, buu, etc..) had no motive and just wanted to destroy the world just because. No depth to any of the characters, no backstory on the villains everything is just black and white. Either evil or good.

In naruto and other animes countless episodes are spent developing the main characters and the villains and how they became the villain. I mean all of naruto is about how Sasuke grows into a villain. DBZ is just a very simplistic anime.Only thing going to DBZ was the action. Im just saiyin (lol see wat I did there)...

1. No character development? Vegeta went from being a sadistic, cold warrior to a loving warrior who would sacrifice himself for the sake of the earth and his family. Piccolo went from a demon looking for revenge to a mentor and ally to gohan anf goku respectively. Gohan went from a timid boy to a powerful warrior

2. the villains did have motive: Frieza wanted to rule the universe forever, so he wanted the dragonballs, he killed anyone in his way and when the balls turned to stone, he got furious and fought them. Cell was a machine who's purpose was to be perfect. When he became perfect, he wanted to test his power by holding a tournament, where he died. Buus purpose was to bring destruction.

3. Dbz is not simple, check my Debate With Me thread, one of my posts there proves it

4. Obviously, you need some growing up to do

alright first....you do know that kishi was inspired to make naruto because of dragonball z right?(one of his many inspirations)
second....you might be watching the watered down XD channel version that took out all the blood and stuff
three....you say that the villians had no plot maybe your forgetting that when dragonball z came out it was a different time...people were satisfied by different things, things like naruto and fullmetal alchemist are intricate so people realize the value of advanced cartoons(hence why your saying dragonball z was simple)
fourth...it was "simple" like that back in the days because that is what apparently satisfied the customers in the times it came out...buddyboy

tis blasphemy to imply such things. It didn't need a story line. its 2012 and the action in DBZ is still raw. Sometimes naruto is too much talk not enough action, sometimes.

Interesting statements by the Thread Opener. I read through the first 6 pages of this thread. And like most anime/manga followers (if not all) anime/manga fans outside of Japan, DBZ pretty much opened our eyes to the vast world of Anime/Manga (saying Anime/Manga is getting redundant ).

It was through DBZ that my interesting in Anime and Manga was sparked. It was the reason I started watching my favorite Anime of all time Yu Yu Hakusho. Along with Zatch Bell, Case Closed and Naruto. Not a fan of One Piece, Bleach or Gundam wing.

But along with DBZ there was another Anime that really influenced the US in terms of Anime: Pokemon. I'm surprised I haven't seen one person mention Pokemon as an influential Anime in the US in the parts of the thread I read.. Hell, I think I started watching Pokemon before DBZ. I would say Pokemon had a big hand in influencing the US.

But at the end of the day, DBZ one an amazing Anime and one of the best ever. Doesn't matter if it doesn't go as in depth as Naruto, it still was amazing. The overpowered fights alone were enough. DBZ's influence is quite astonishing if you think about it. You could ask completely random people from almost anywhere in the US without any knowledge of Anime/Manga if they know who Goku is. And you'll get the answer "From DBZ?" a whomping percentage of the time. But despite Naruto's popularity, there's still a good number of people who have no clue what it is.

Right now, Naruto ranks number 2 on my favorite Anime list with DBZ in a close 3rd and Yu Yu Hakusho 1st.

I agree with OP.I see no reason from the flaming, honestly,I tuned out DBZ after seeing the main characters destroy planets with their freakin' pinkies. The drawings are worse than the ones in the early episodes of one piece and the apparent lack of development is astonishing .

Being a legend doesn't mean you're immune to criticism....
