Dragonball z has always been a difficult anime/manga when it comes to tying down specific values. Whether its inconsistent translations, or flat out lack of detail.

A common question though is "are the warriors of dbz faster than light?" Finally, we have a concrete value to show at least certain ones who can.

For this, we need to understand one thing. The space ships in dragonball z can travel MASSIVELY faster than light. This is confirmed. Bulma was convinced traveling to namek would be impossible because of how far it is. She said it would take like, hundreds to thousands of years. But Mr Popo shows her that kami's ship can travel to jupiter in less than 5 seconds (thats being generous too). Keep in mind, it takes light 8 minutes to travel to earth, and jupiter is several SEVERAL times that distance.

Now, one COULD look at the fact that bulma could talk on her phone with her dad from earth, meaning that they can send electro magnetic waves faster than light (with no delay), although i'll chalk that up to a physics error.

Anyway, the one character that can DEFINITELY move faster than the speed of light LINEARLY (not teleportation) is Whis, trainer of Beerus the god of Destruction. In order to show this, we have to look at the distance he traveled, and the time it took.

Although we do not know how far away king kai's planet is from beerus's homeworld. However, we don't really NEED to. We know that beerus and whis traveled to king kai's planet in 26 minutes from beerus' planet. And 7 minutes from king kai's to earth. Given that it takes sunlight 240 some odd minutes to reach neptune, if whis was traveling at the speed of light, that would put beerus's homeworld somewhere in our solar system, which know it isn't. We see its near a small star.

Now this is just a tangent. its not really part of my evidence but its worth noting. If we assume the stars within the dbz universe are the same as in our universe (which there's no reason not to be), that would mean if we assumed this star near beerus's home is the closest star to the sun, its STILL over 4 light years away. so 33 minutes vs 4 years.

Now back to the main point. In the cell saga, goku was ASTOUNDED that he was able to actually teleport to king kai's world. it was in his words "really really far away". Mind you, this is the same goku who could easily teleport from his space ship to intercept frieza on earth. That same space ship that is MASSIVELY faster than light that took 3 hours to get here. Meaning that goku was able to comfortably teleport 3,237,758,546,400 meteres. So if we assume the spaceship was going the speed of light (we know it actually to be going much MUCH faster as it was at least 4 times the speed of the namekian ship which was massively faster than light) that makes goku comfortably able to teleport

I promise i'm wrapping it up. Since goku was surprised how far away king kai was and he was able to teleport there, its a fair estimate that it's significantly farther than his jump to fight frieza. Meaning that king kai's planet is at the very LEAST 0.000342238658 light years away. It would take at least 3 hours for LIGHT to cross that distance. I guess i did a bunch of unecessary math, but i just want to get the point across. It would take light likely several times MORE than 3 hours to cross a distance that whis linearly traveled in 7 minutes (likely a much LARGER distance)

In conclusion, whis is MASSIVELY faster than light in his movement.

now, i'm pretty sure many of the dbz cast are massively faster than light in short bursts and in combat scenarios. I can't prove it though.

This i can prove. Whis is massively faster than light

I'm pretty sure the NF calc's confirm whis is MFTL. Link to calc.

Few Eos DBZ character imo should be FTL in short burst movement. Considering the Fact that Piccolo's Special beam canon travelled to the moon in a very short time (most Eos DBZ character should be a lot faster than his canon) and this was saiyan saga piccolo.
I tried to stay away from blast time because things like piccolo calling his makakansapo light speed is considered a translation error. so i just avoided that one. good point though

It's not a translation error, it's a funi dub line only. The dub has other weird lines. Piccolo never said that to raditz in the sub nor the manga. Besides, I'm talking about his feat when he busts the moon, his beam Canon reaches the moon in a very short time frame.

Yeah, but i'm saying that we don't know that projectile speeds necessarily scale linearly with abilities. I mean, with the exception of friezas final form death beam and special beam canon, none of the attacks speeds are really brought up a lot. I'm sure its a valid parameter, it just is hard to measure.

Also, technically, at the end of portal 2, the portal shouldn't have reached the moon in a second, it should have taken hours and hours. And thats a valve game... if valve is allowed physics inconsistencies, dbz should too haha

yeah, that's why it never got a definite scaling.

Just like in singualirty, the TMD can age pretty much anything but fails to age zeks or certain creatures mutated with E99 (it can age many other e99 infected things), its an inconsistency but we're not gonna take it that literally. That's one of reasons DBZ has inconsistent feat scalings. Either you don't have a specific time frame or the feats are outliers or lack any credible basis. The only logical scaling with a reasonable time frame was gotenks flying across the world which was set at mach 31,000 (based on fusion timing). Physic inconsistencies (or gag feats) exist, but they should'nt always be applicable in serious or combat situations. Like seriously a guy who takes Exaton worth of firepower and freiza's death beams is afraid of being injected by needles or as SSJ4 goku getting cut by class (non canon, but its out there).

roshi's kamehameha wave in db reached the moon in a few seconds that alone proves that dbz fighters are FTL since they can dodge ftl energy beam attacks rather easily

ty and goku solos ur fave

Like kurririn and rosh gag fighting too fast for anyone to see in db. The gotenks one is hard to call because 1) we don't know he was max speed (or that anyone ever is, maybe they don't fly at max to avoid sonic booms wrecking peoples Windows. Whis being an exception because he was in space) and 2) we don't know if there's a gap between him flying and showing up at the end of his fusion, due to editing, he might have been doing other stuffs and the flying only took a second

He could have dodged while it was charging. But cell tried to dodge when he saw the power it had. He was unable to dodge the full speed of the attack and it grazed him.
cell was faking the whole time. It was clear when he revealed to vegeta that he wasn't worried about the attack later. Cell never had any intention of dodging it, he was merely surprised that it was more powerful than he thought.

Besides even if we were to assume that cell couldn't dodge it, cell was heavily suppressed at that point. He wasn't even using 10% of his power. If he can arguably dodge an MFTL attack at less than 10% it is more than likely that he is MFTL at 100%
