DBZ characters are kinda egotistical

Why did the DBZ fighters felt with the right to be the only ones to use the Dragon balls?
After all even if they wanted the dragon balls to revive people most of times, they almost always used the dragon balls to revive their own people, a couple of times they used it to revive a lot of people killed by cell and majin buu mostly but most of the times they only revived their own people.

Also when they went to namekuzeyi, the elders of the villages handed the dragon balls to them with such ease, why the elders let strangers use their dragon balls when they could have used them in that astronomical catastrophe that killed most of their people? because they let things go and were not so selfcentered.
