Darui can whip Gaara easily

It's not all about elemental advantages though 
(although it's debatable since sand isn't really Earth style)
Gaara's sand is known to pressure taijutsu/speed centered shinobi from his childhood. I don't think Darui can get close with that coming at him at the same time. At least not without some sort of trump card. As Kimimaro said, Gaara's sand is impressive since it can act as both an offense and a great defense. Being a near 360 degree defense, I don't think even Darui's homing lasers can get him. He does actually have some water release to weigh Gaara's sand down a bit, but he's not known for his water style or anything. The longer this battle goes on, the stronger Gaara gets as he'll just create more sand.

No, Gaara wins mid difficulty because he is much stronger than Darui. Gaara's sand is now very fast and very strong and I don't think Darui can outspeed or overpower Gaara's sand. Although Darui does seem like a low kage level shinobi and would give Gaara a decent fight with his storm release.
