I wanted to start watching HxH..but i heard its orientation is on the dark side and will usually ruin the mood? Is that true? How is it as a manga and as an anime?

Lmfao ruin your mood... It won't. Its greatness and watch the 2011 anime then read the manga.

Yeah, it can be a bit dark because Togashi loves the horror genre. It makes it even better IMO.
