I don't understand where the dark chakra comes from.

if it hits them from the side, do I first have to aim to their right/left side, release the dark chakra then 'wave' my hand so that it hits from that side?

Chakra comes from absorbing a previous technique, and using a little of your own. Releasing it from the upper diamond on your hand, releases the chakra that is needed for this move.

So you wave your hand, and release the chakra as you go, it's pretty much like the gif, just obviously you can see the dark chakra.
