I consider him a villain. As far as who started this war, Madara was the one who did. His manipulation towards Nagato and Obito to the dark side, implanting a Juinjutsu on Obito to make sure he follows every order, killed their closest people for them to be easily controlled, and made sure Zetsu watch over things. All of that lead to him establishing the Akatsuki, Konoha's destruction from Kyuubi, and his return.

I'm trying to connect the dots of the events that might be directly related to Madara's planning. I made many conjectures that you guys might had thought about them too. It's nothing really special, but I thought that I want to share it, even though many of you guys might already have the same general idea as me.


Madara's planning looks like it depended a lot on chances and coincidences but I don't really think so. I believe that his planning went beyond what we already knew for certain.

What we already know:

1. Madara used Kirigakure shinobis to drag Obito to work for him. Genjutsu perhaps.

2. Madara implanted his Rinnegan into Nagato's eye sockets when he was a kid. One of the mystery that was never revealed to us on how exactly he did this.

So now we come to the theory part......

Madara's real plannings arranged chronologically:

Uzumaki clan's destruction
Theory: Madara destroyed the Uzushiogakure.

Uzumaki clan was known for their sealing jutsus. They would be a hindrance to Madara's plan. Uzushigakure's destruction was a part of his plan.

If he was easily able to control Kirigakure shinobis to kidnap Rin which we don't really know how he did that, then it's not too far-fetched to think that he had done more or less the same thing to destroy Uzushiogakure.

Uzumaki clan is known with strong life force, with some of them known to be born with strong chakra like Mito and Kushina. He was collecting data of the Uzumaki individuals too, which led him to find Nagato.


Nagato
Theory: He was targeting Nagato after the destruction of Uzushiogakure.

It might be that Uzumaki people are among the few of those that can handle double Rinnegan. Obito said that he couldn't implant both eyes, which means that a common Uchiha even with Senju DNA can't handle implanted double Rinnegan.

Madara used Zetsu to spy on Uzumaki clan's people. With the data brought back by Zetsu, he found out that Nagato was a suitable candidate for his Rinnegan especially because he migrated into Amegakure, a place where war was constantly happening, which was the perfect place to create darkness within Nagato.

Nagato's parents' death was Madara's plan. He used the Konoha shinobis just like he used the Kirigakure shinobis in Obito's case. He confirmed that Nagato was able to handle the power of the Rinnegan when Nagato killed the 2 Konoha shinobis that killed his parents. It was to test Nagato's powers and to instill some hatred in Nagato's heart.

Coincidentally, Nagato got trained by Jiraiya. Madara was actually pleased with this development because Nagato would be able to grow up and handle the Rinnegan more properly.

After that, Madara just needed a successor and someone to guide Nagato, and he started to find his successor which would be Obito.

In short, he had been spying on Uzumaki people and came across Nagato.


Obito
Theory: He was targeting Obito before Obito got to the Grass village to destroy the Kannabi Bridge.

Madara needed a successor, and there was no one appropriate except from the Uchiha itself. He himself was aware of his clan's "curse of hatred" and how the Sharingan works.

He didn't meet Obito by chance, because if he did meet Obito by chance, it's too much of a coincidence because the cave that collapsed on Obito was just above a passageway made by Madara.

He was actually spying the people of Uchiha with Zetsu and one day found out that a kind Uchiha boy was on a mission to destroy the Kannabi Bridge. From Zetsu's data, he knew a lot about Obito and decided to drag him to his side, manipulate him and create darkness within Obito's kind heart.

Just like how he controlled the Mist shinobis that kidnapped Rin making her the Sanbi's jinchuuriki, he controlled the Stone shinobis to attack Team Minato and to kidnap Rin into the cave.

Madara knew that Obito was someone who loved his comrades too much and put them above himself. The collapsing of the cave by the Stone shinobis was Madara’s plan. Obito getting crushed because of saving his friends, was Madara’s plan too. He knew exactly what happened, look at this:

To which we can conclude that Zetsu had been watching everything Team Minato was doing from the start. Madara planned everything to happen and had been watching them.

After dragging Obito to his side, to prevent Obito from betraying him, he put the puppet seal into his heart to prevent him from becoming the Juubi Jin or committing suicide.

In conclusion, he never found Obito by chance. He had been spying on Uchiha kids for a potential candidate to be his successor.

Well, Danzo did fart on a butterfly that one time and as it fluttered away coughing, it was eaten up by one of Itachi's crows (he forgot to buy crow feed- AGAIN!). The crow was so repulsed by the smell of his lil butterfly meal that he vomited the lil basterd up into a feild of corn. Now this corn belonged to Old Man Johnson who was a farmer by day, but a rogue ninja pimp by night, naturally. So Old Man J-Sonny was harvesting his corn about this time and the smelly, gooey half digested butter poop fly got packed in tight with the corn, then ground up later into corn meal. This corn meal was sent on a very dangerous mission by old man Jsonny's most trusted bottom b-word. She tucked the meal into her lederhosen cause she was one of "those types". On her way to the snausage festival, the corn meal package was stolen by a starving child in the grass village. His only dream was to live free or die hard. I dont want to ruin the rest of the story for everyone but lets just say the poor child's knees did not fare all too well curse ye Danzo!!!!!!!!

With that said.... I dont think anybody really likes Danzo so no one would really defend him. People could bash Danzo all day. Which is good really. Means he was a good villain and that Hiruzen was a crappy hokage that could maim and disable his most NON trusted village member AND make him head of a secret security force, but not kill him cause that would be cruel. Really? What was he thinking?!?!?!

Danzo was a convenient entity that occurred completely per chance in accordance with Madara's plan.

He was the one to open the doors for the plan to move through easily; he was just a "happy" coincidence.

You're right I forgot to mention Hashirama stopped Tobirama from killing Madara preventing any of this including the dissent he sowed in the Uchiha clan which led to the revolt which led to the execution sanctioned by Danzo and you know the rest.
