I liked when I could honestly say they were still friends, but their roles in the village made it so they couldn't hang out as much as they could when children, mainly because everyone is so suspicious of Danzo.

That's why I hated the filler when Danzo tried to assassinate Hiruzen. While I can agree that Danzo would go really far across the line to protect Konoha, I always thought killing Hiruzen was the ONE line he would never cross. But of course, the Anime has to make Danzo the lord of Douches.

Hiruzen d reserved one, Danzo d janjaweed...danzo was envious of Sarutobi and would harm him to get what he wants-Hokage title he more than cherished...but they're more lyk frienemies(danzo's view) than friends(Hiruzen's wish).
