It was not going to pierce Enma's Diamond Hard Body. Enma stated that (Viz Translation) that the Sword of Kusanagi could MAKE HIM SORE, not that it could pierce him, which is understandable when you take into account that the sword has magical properties. But Orochimaru's sword couldnt even pierce naruto's Kyuubi cloak which is not diamond hard. Hiruzen not only used enma to countered the kusanagi, but he also overpowered it to disarm orochimaru.

A explosion of that kind is not having any effect on a diamond enma, as the only thing that can harm a diamond is another diamond. Enma's cage would easily tank that explosion while protecting hiruzen, as gaara's sand was able to tank it and Enma has more durability that gaara's sand.
