But he managed to possess Madara. I mean Madara is pretty much strongest character in the manga. Him being taken out by black zetsu makes no sense.

contrary to popular belief, Black Zetsu didn't kill Madara. He immobilized him, but it was the chakra overload and the subsequent resurrection of Kaguya that did it.
