It's sad that there is such a double standard in America.

Generally, it is viewed that men should be able to handle themselves, while women are still considered to be "weaker". However, a large number of domestic violence cases, especially ones that are not reported, are of the woman abusing the male in the relationship.

This sort of thing occurs in all aspects of society. You should go watch the social experiment about people trying to steal a bike. It brings to light both sexist and racist social tendencies. These views are also generally more widely held in groups that, at least on the surface, profess equality.

I'm really glad all those people stood up for her. I know it wasn't real but if it had been then it was obvious that she couldn't defend herself.

It is disappointing that no one intervened with the man and it does have sexiest undertones but you have to also understand the mindset of something like this. When people see a man attacking a woman they see a situation were someone cannot defend themselves. On the flip side they see a situation were someone is refusing to defend themselves.

It is like seeing an adult hit a child and a child hit an adult.

Gender roles and equality are different. Gender roles are a more basic, instinctive perception of the sexes in basic form I mean, men are stronger and protect, women are weaker and care. Men tend to be born with the instinct to protect and women with the instinct to care.

Equality is equal rights, respect and opportunities. I know what I mean but I'm not great at putting it across.

Anyway I'm not explaining away what she was supposed to be doing just one reason why people reacted different.

Violence is violence and is always wrong. But it is perceived differently in a situation where a person cannot defend themselves and will not defend themselves. As in, he could have restrained her and then walked away, where as she was at his mercy, that is what I mean.
