Genjutsu is the second subcategory of Jutsu used in NV. The other two being Ninjutsu (physical use of chakra) and Taijutsu (hand to hand). Genjutsu, like Ninjutsu, also uses chakra to employ itself in battle. Some genjutsu also require hand seals to mold the necessary chakra for usage. The basic principle of genjutsu is to manipulate the opponent's chakra flow in their body (specifically the brain) causing their senses to be manipulated and changes. The principle use of genjutsu is to manipulate one's sight and hearing. However other genjutsu can go further and manipulate smell and touch. This is unlike taijutsu and ninjutsu because both of these are based on the principle of causing direct physical damage.

Genjutsu is most commonly used to create false impressions for the body which can lead to a number of occurrences such as false images and pain. The pain can be caused by genjutsu because pain is something the mind experiences. If you fool the body into believing it is in pain, the mind will respond accordingly.

Genjutsu requires one to have a high intelligence and very keen observational skills. If one does not use both of these skills then the targeted victim of a genjutsu will be able to recognize and take the necessary actions to escape it. Probably the most famous user of genjutsu I can think of is Itachi Uchiha. His Tsukuyomi, a dojutsu of the Mangekyo Sharingan, was capable of manipulating a person's sense of time within the genjutsu making 1 second appear as 3 days.

To escape a genjutsu one must first be able to recognize that they are in one. There are many genjutsu that are easily recognized. However some are extremely subtle and require keen knowledge and understanding of how the genjutsu works. There are three methods of escape from a genjutsu.

The first is Kai - Release.

Rank: C-S
Type: Supplementary
Range: Short
Chakra Cost: 15-40
Damage Points: N/A
Description: The user does one hand seal to focus and then proceeds to disturb his chakra flow by forcefully stopping it momentarily and then "spiking" his spiritual energy, unbalancing his chakra. This dispels any genjutsu set upon the user except MS Eye Techniques, Paralysis-like Genjutsu and Demonic Illusion: Toad Confrontation Chant. The effectiveness of this technique is dependent upon the skill of the user. A Jounin rank ninja can dispel Genjutsu up to C-rank. An S-class ninja can dispel Genjutsu up to B-rank. A Sannin rank ninja can dispel Genjutsu up to A-rank. A Sage rank user can dispel Genjutsu up to S-Rank. The user may use this technique through physical contact on others to dispel them from Genjutsu. The technique can only be used once per turn and the user still needs to fully follow the logic as to why he figured out it was an illusion.

A genjutsu can be released through Kai by disturbing one's own chakra flow. Additionally if you have a partner in a battle with you they can use this technique on you by touching you and disturbing your own chakra flow as well.

The second method to releasing a genjutsu is physical pain. By causing your own body physical harm outside of the genjutsu world you bring your mind back to its senses. However the stronger the genjutsu used the more pain is required. An S-ranked genjutsu would require you to slice deep into your body, almost severing important arteries. This can be almost fatal.

The third and final way to release a genjutsu is to release chakra from all over your body. This will act as a way to disrupts its flow as well. One jutsu that will allow for this to work is this:

Rank: S
Type: Offense/Defence/Supplementary
Range: Short
Chakra Cost: 40 (-15 per turn)
Damage Points: N/A
Description: The user releases a burst of earth chakra from all over his body. As he does this, a multitude of rock seemingly grows from his skin, forming a large, dense armour or rock much bigger and bulkier than the users original size. The armour can be manipulated and used to create extendable weapons to strike a target with like rudimentary swords or hammers. The downside is that the user cannot mold techniques from other elements a part from earth while sustaining the armor. The armor can be manifested in only specific parts of the body if the user so chooses.

Finally, the most noted genjutsu dojutsu is the Sharingan. The Sharingan is capable of producing many genjutsu without eye contact which is what many regular genjutsu require. Additionally, Sharingan users are able to pierce through genjutsu easily and see through its manipulative effects. Rinnegan users and Byakugan users will also be able to recognize when one is under the effects of a genjutsu because their chakra flow will be strange and different to them.

I don't think I missed anything :p. Apologies if I did!

Genjutsu is similar to Ninjutsu because it requries chakra like all techniques, but it is different because unlike Ninjutsu there is no physical manifestation of chakra. The chakra doesn't actually turn into a physical attack. Genjutsu attacks the opponent's mind. It affects the prosencephalon structure of the brain. The most important thing to remember about this section of the brain is that it controls emotions. Remember the Genjutsu cannot be used to force an opponent to do an exact action unless it is high level such as MS or EMS, or other really powerful Genjutsu. Common Genjutsu simply provide the opponent's mind with a proper situation in which the user inserts a certain basic response to the situation that is to the user's advantage. Those with sensing abilities or eye techniques (to the appropriate strength) can see and feel the differences in what is in their mind and what is actually happening.

Genjutsu is produced by inserting the user's chakra into the opponent's brain. The user manipulates his chakra in the opponent's Chakra Circulatory System in the opponent's brain to manipulate the opponent's senses to make the opponent see, hear, or even feel what the user wants them to.

Tell me the ways you can combat Genjutsu if you are caught in it. Describe the process of what you would think about when you may believe you are affect.

Well there are three ways to combat a genjutsu. But before I get into those one must first recognize they are in a genjutsu before releasing themselves from it. Some genjutsu are obvious to spot. They would be ones that add extra opponents to the battlefield that were not there originally. If the opponent hadn't used a clone technique to create these illusions then it is an obvious genjutsu. Also other genjutsu are easy to spot because of the actions the opponent can take in them. Such as turning into birds. Basically as long as we have a logical reason for the genjutsu we can escape it.

Now onto the three ways to escape:

The first one is through the use of Genjutsu release, or Kai. It allows one to release themselves from a genjutsu by disrupting their chakra flow. The rank the genjutsu that can be escaped is directly related to what the user's rank is.

Rank: C-S

Good now before we can begin the actual jutsu, you need to do a short training exercise. Genjutsu is all about the user's imagination. I want you to create a battle situation then apply your Genjutsu to the opponent and tell me how your Genjutsu affects the surroundings and his reaction to the Genjutsu, and how you can use what you created to your advantage. Keep it realistic.

So I'm assuming you want me to create a battle scenario with details on what is around based on the five basic senses. Then use genjutsu to manipulate one or more of those senses. I apologize if I'm a bit off xD. I'm also going to assume by realistic you mean realistic in terms of NV.

So in my scenario I am standing mid range from my opponent. We're both wearing our regular attire. The battle field is a flat open field with a treeline to the north (behind me) and a river 7 meters south of my opponent. In my scenario the river is flowing normally creating noise that a river would normally make. As well in the scenario the wind is blowing slightly and the sun is just overhead (noon).

With genjutsu I can manipulate the five senses. They are: touch, smell, taste, sight, and hearing. In the battle I can weave a false hand sign to signal the use of a jutsu. My opponent will think nothing of it and will assume I am preparing a ninjutsu. However in actuality I will have put him under a genjutsu the instant after I made the false hand seal. The benefit of this is that it will make it much harder for them to deduce logically that they are in a genjutsu.

In the genjutsu I will have tendrils rise from the water and restrain my opponent. This will manipulate the touch sense by forcing them in their mind to be bound by the water tendrils. So in reality I will have the advantage here. This will allow me to strike at them without any resistance or fear of counters. To make the genjutsu even harder to escape from I can manipulate the shadows of the tendrils that rise up from the water in the genjutsu to make it appear as if they are real. Since the sun will be rising overhead at noon time the shadows will be directly below the tendrils. Additionally I can maintain the speed of the wind and the sound of the river. All of this makes it MUCH harder for the enemy to deduce they are in a genjutsu which means I have more time to strike at them without worrying about a counter attack.

Alright since this is different from the normal there is a different set of questions that you must answer for this, and I will explain it differently. I want you to explain:

-How the technique is performed. (which is basic for all techniques)
-What senses the genjutsu affects and how it affects them?
-How the genjutsu creates an opening for the attack.
-In what situations would use it, if you would use it at all. Provide reasoning.

Read over these before I post the first two jutsu. We will be going two at a time to start then move at one at a time once we get to the higher ranks.

( Magen: Kokoni Arazu no Jutsu ) - Demonic Illusion: False Surroundings Technique
Rank: D
Type: Supplementary
Range: Short-Mid
Chakra Cost: 10 (+5 if you use it double)
Damage Points: N/A
Description: The user casts an illusion over an area that allows him to manipulate the way an area looks to fool an opponent. He can only change the way the terrain looks, and not any other feature.

This is a basic illusion that affects the way the opponent's sees the terrain. The main sense affected by this technique is sight. You cannot make the opponent feel certain aspects of the terrain such as making the ground rise up around them as that would exceed the capabilities of the technique. Each illusion has a limit to how much it can affect the opponent which is how it creates a certain opening. This technique use is used to manipulate the opponents sight of their surroundings to make it seem like everything around them had changed. Because this is a purely visual technique, an opponent with an eye technique able to see through it or a sensor, can brush it off like its nothing. When this technique is used, because the opponent sees the terrain differently, use it to your advantage to combine it with another attack or move. You can make an earth wall rise up skillfully to hide yourself from your opponents vision. If this is used against you, analyze the changes in terrain to detect whether they are possible or not.

( Genjutsu: Kahen Tonsou ) - Illusion Technique: Flower Petal Escape
Rank: D
Type: Supplementary
Range: Short-Mid
Chakra Cost: 10
Damage Points: N/A
Description: The user makes five handseals, appearing to dissolve into a shower of cherry blossom petals. These petals surround the opponent, blocking his vision. This allows the user to mask his movement effectively.

This technique requires five hand seals and basically makes it seem as if the opponent escaped in a shower of cherry blossoms, and also blocks the opponents vision. This is similar to the first technique in that it manipulates only vision. You actually don't dissolve into cherry blossoms in the actual event of things but your opponents sees the even as if you dissolved. You can use this to momentarily escape your opponents sights so that you can launch a sneak attack at them. The power of this technique makes it so that it is easily able to be broken through various methods, just as the previous technique, but this isn't exactly meant to overpower your opponent. It is meant to confuse your opponent for a slight instant in which they cannot see your actions. In this time you could strategic set-ups that your opponent cannot respond to unless they god mod that you can use in the future.

Well this technique is performed in the most basic way all genjutsu are performed. It sends chakra into the user to disrupt and manipulate their basic five senses. In this case the jutsu manipulates their sense of sight by making changes to the battle field. These changes can range from slight subtle changes like the changing of a tree to a giant stone rock being placed in the genjutsu blocking the opponent's line of sight. This genjutsu would create an opening for an attack by causing the opponent to attack in the wrong direction or at the wrong target causing them to leave an opening for a counter attack on the real battlefield. I would use this when I want my opponent to take into account for objects that are not really there. So when an opponent attacks me they may have to use a raiton to get through a rock that was placed there. This leaves them extremely open to a fuuton. I can use it to manipulate their actions. Of course this jutsu requires a high amount of detail to be used or else the opponent will easily be able to escape it as they will identify it.

So once again this genjutsu is a visual only genjutsu. It affects sight. It works just like the last one where you'll use your chakra to manipulate the victim's sense of sight to make it appear as if your body has just dispersed into hundreds of cherry blossom petals. So this genjutsu basically does the same as a large scale ninjutsu. It will conceal your position allowing you to use attacks without the opponent's knowledge. However since this is such an obvious genjutsu the time you have to use this opening is very limited. So one has to use a very fast jutsu to take advantage of the opening (such as a raiton). I would use this to create an opening for a raiton. And even if they did manage to release from the genjutsu fast enough I would quickly follow up with another jutsu that would strike from either below or above them (specifically I'd try to use a katon because the most logical counter to a raiton is fuuton).

( Genjutsu: Kasumi ) - Illusion Technique: Servant
Rank: D
Type: Supplementary
Range: Short
Chakra Cost: 10
Damage Points: 20
Description: The user does one handseal and throws a paper bomb at the enemy. The enemy, trapped in a genjutsu will see a clone of the user advancing upon him. As the paper bomb reaches the enemy, it explodes

( Kasumi Jūsha no Jutsu ) - Mist Servant Technique
Rank: D
Type: Supplementary
Range: Short-Mid
Chakra Cost:10
Damage Points: N/A
Description: This illusion creates numerous illusionary clones of the user that appear to emerge from the ground, trees, rocks, etc. If these clones are attacked, they appear to multiply. The user can co-ordinate his attacks with the clones to make it appear as if they are real.

The following two techniques are similar and different in certain aspect of their uses. I will explain them to you at the same time discussing these similarities and differences but I still want you to look at the techniques separately as you have done for previous techniques. But I would like it if you also added your thoughts on how the techniques relate to each other. Both techniques are same in that they both create illusions that look like clones. The first technique is different in that it requires one hand seals and turn a moving projectile into a clone which is why it needs the hand seal for more precise manipulation of your chakra in the opponent's brain while the second technique creates clones to come out of random places thus not requiring as much attention to detail. The first technique turns the paper bomb kunai into a clone of yourself that approaches toward the opponent, once it gets close the paper bomb explodes and your opponent doesn't expect the clone to be an illusion catching them off guard. The second causes clones to come out of the surroundings. This is made to seem like you gained an advantage in numbers. You opponent will because that they will have to deal with all of your clones at the same time. You simply affect their vision to produce projections of yourself around the opponent to make it seem like clones. while in the first technique you affect their vision to manipulate how they perceive the kunai and changing that into a clone. You can use the first technique to catch your opponent off guard by also making a shadow clone thus they wouldn't be able to tell the difference if they all attack him at the same time. But I want to make sure that you know that it is only short range, so it's uses are very limited. So the easiest way to counter to make your opponent pay for coming so close. Use a technique that can over a mere paper bomb and attack your opponent at the same time. The illusion won't even matter if you don't treat it as an illusion but take the opponent advancing toward you as a reason to attack. The second illusion extends up to mid range, but the clones are all illusions. So the easiest way is to use a large scale technique that can hit all the clones at the same time, so that the illusions can defend themselves. If the technique is used in close range, they use projectiles to determine that one of the clones is an illusion of the clones interactions with its environment to analyze you're in an illusion then break out of it through pain.

So the first technique is performed by using a single hand seal and sending your chakra into the opponent to place them in this genjutsu. So this genjutsu affects the opponent's sight and nothing else. It tricks them into believing that instead of a paper bomb approaching them they will see a regular clone. So this creates an opening for the paper bomb itself. It also creates an opening because they will think that it is just a regular clone approaching them so they might get a little careless in their counter. As you said this technique is pretty limited in its uses since its short range. However I would use this in case an enemy did come within close range. Since the regular E-rank clone illusion doesn't require a hand seal it would be fairly easy to make this technique work in close range. It is believable that the clone appeared because of the no hand seal requirement for the E-rank bunshin.

So for this one. Also based on clones. This time it doesn't require a hand seal but it still uses your own chakra to influence the opponent's sense of sight to place them in the genjutsu. So this is pretty similar to the last one as it uses the same concept behind the clone technique. It just affects sight but you can manipulate the genjutsu to use attacks in tandem with yours so you can have the opponent believe that they are going to be attacked from multiple angles and in a great number. So for example, the clones can all time the release of multiple kunai at the same time from multiple angles. This will manipulate how the enemy counters the attack and possibly leave them open for a follow up. So this technique, unlike the last, has a longer range. You can even have the clones appear as if they are using a deadly elemental attack and in reality you will be the only one doing such. This creates an opening on the opponent because they will think they have to use a large scale jutsu to defend against it. However this technique is pretty obvious as a genjutsu because normally clones do not appear to emerge from the trees and ground and what not. They just appear next to the user within short range. So it would be a fairly easy genjutsu to logically break out of.

( Magen: Narakumi ) - Demonic Illusion: Hell Viewing
Rank: D
Type: Supplementary
Range: Short
Chakra Cost: 10
Damage Points: N/A
Description: The user performs two handseals causing it to appear as if a swirl of leaves surrounds the opponent. The swirl eventually falls away, and after a few seconds, the opponent sees the image of whatever they fear the most, shocking them and potentially causing them to faint.

This is a visual based genjutsu but is it a little more complicated than the previous ones. Remember how I said that the region that you input your chakra into the opponent's brain is the region that controls emotions. That fact plays an incredibly important role in genjutsu such as this. This technique requires two hand seals because of this fact in that it requires even more precise manipulation of you chakra in the opponent's brain. The first part of the technique involves using your chakra to manipulate the opponent's vision. You will simply make them see a swirl of leaves that temporarily blocks their vision. You then use your chakra to find and amplify their fear. This is the emotion that you want to bring out with this technique. You will not cause the opponent to fear anything, but instead you will simply use what they already fear against them. By using your chakra to manipulate the opponent's mind and emotions, you can cause the fear to build up to great proportions. You then project the fear using your manipulation of their vision to make them see what they fear after the leaves fade away. By combining the amplification of the fear to some extent with the impact of the opponent being presented with the fear visual you create a short opening in which you shock them. Now to the truth of this technique. It is very weak and thus skilled ninja can easily break out of it. To be honest, there is no real use from this technique perhaps than to interrupt your opponent's move where they simply cut themselves to break out. The jutsu can be easily be perceived as genjutsu because it is unrealistic for someone's fears to just arise out of thin air. If it is used on you, just reason yourself on why its not possible, and cut yourself to break out. Ultimately not a good technique to use. I find only False Surroundings be useful of all the D-ranks.

So like all genjutsu this technique is performed by precisely putting your chakra into the victim's mind. However this requires more precision than previous and as such needs two handseals. So the basic sense this affects is sight. However it goes deeper than that. The sight will manipulate what they see and as such they will see something they fear greatly after the leaves clear. So as you said this is to bring out an emotion and behavioral response - fear.

So a few issues I see with this. The first - making a fear appear out of no where is useless because, as you said, they can just easily break out of it. It is an obvious sight illusion. The second is this. No one will faint to this. In the RP everyone would ignore or brush something like that off because they simply RP their characters as someone immune to a fear like that. So as you said it really isn't a good technique and is just a waste of chakra. Its only good for the leaves which will temporarily distract them. But even that is pretty meh.

( Kori Shinchū no Jutsu ) - Sly Mind Affect Technique
Rank: C
Type: Supplementary
Range: Short-Mid
Chakra Cost:15
Damage Points: N/A
Description: The user casts an illusion on the opponent that makes them believe they are travelling in a straight line, when instead they are moving in circles. This is only effective on moving opponents. If the opponent travels in the circle for hours, they will be exhausted.

A basic illusion that affects the opponent's basic sense of vision and affects slightly with the coordination of the opponent's body. This illusion only works on opponent's that are already moving. Essentially what this technique does it make an opponent who is running directly at you believe that you are still moving straight except they are actually moving around in circles. This is great when an opponent is trying to come at you to attack in short range, because this technique extends all the way up to mid-range, you can just use this technique to make your opponent believe that they are still coming at you except they will feel that they are not getting closer. Though in their mind they see straight, you manipulate their sense of direction that that they begin moving in circles over and over again thus not getting close to you at all. You can use this technique to create an opponent where you opponent does not realize that they have been trapped in the genjutsu until obviously after sometime in which they can see that they are no getting close to you, which will force them to get closer. In that brief time, you can attack them with another jutsu so they are forced to guard immediately after breaking out. If your opponent uses this one you, reason yourself on how you are no making distance, and break out. As displacement of position is the most important aspect of this tech.

So once again the illusion is performed by sending your chakra into the opponent's mind and affecting the opponent's vision which causes their sense of direction to be distorted. The illusion works fantastic on an opponent that is traveling in a straight line toward you as you said to cause them to loop around in a circle in reality. This leaves them open to a ton of attacks and of course if they don't escape the illusion they'll just be exhausted. However almost every opponent will realize they aren't getting closer almost a few seconds after the genjutsu has been cast so the opening is not a huge one. This means that the attack that the user needs to follow up with should be something very, very fast. A raiton would work perfectly to kill them due to raitons speed. Or something that attacks them from below. Overall its a nice genjutsu to make a quick opening in the opponent but the opening is very small. And it is just a visual genjutsu so any sharingan user will see right through it very, very easily.

( Genjutsu: Jinmon ) - Illusion Technique: Interrogation
Rank: C
Type: Supplementary
Range: Short
Chakra Cost:15
Damage Points:30
Description: The user of this technique, upon casting on a stationary opponent with physical contact with them, is able to convince the enemy to give away information. However, this will only work on ninja two ranks lower and below than the caster.

Sadly this technique has absolutely no use in the battle arena and has incredibly limited used in even the ninja world. I will not explain it much but I will explain what in does in general understanding. The technique simply makes the opponent give away valuable information by convincing the opponent that you are someone that the opponent can trust. Basically in the context of our RP, information cannot be given out like that in straight forward understanding. And in the battle arena information of this sort is essentially useless. It above that requires you to have physical contact and be in short range. I would not use this technique, if it is attempted then Nagashi is the basic counter.

So yeah. A bit of a useless technique for most purposes ;_;. But nonetheless I have a few questions before I perform my regular analysis. So my first question is what sense does this genjutsu affect exactly (not that it matters much for something useless)? Since genjutsu all require you to manipulate the one or some of the five senses this isn't very clear on what it does.

So as the technique says you have to have physical contact for it to work (which makes it even more useless). Through physical contact you use your chakra to disrupt their chakra to make them see you as someone who is trustworthy and someone they can give away valuable information to. I guess this has some use in the NW but most of the time you have to go through the hell of capturing them alive first and then use this genjutsu on them. Plus since the NW isn't a ton of espionage (at least from what I can tell) this genjutsu won't be terribly useful. So overall yeah I don't foresee myself ever using this technique outside of good roleplay threads.

( Genjutsu: Jigoku Gouka ) - Illusion Technique: Hell Fire
Rank: C
Type: Supplementary
Range: Short-Mid
Chakra Cost: 15
Damage Points:N/A
Description: The user casts an illusion where the opponent sees a huge ball of fire descending from the sky and enveloping its target.

A genjutsu can't really get more basic then this. The user of the technique simply affects the opponent's vision. This technique keep in mind only affects the opponent's vision then they can be overcome with the fact that they are enveloped in fire which can cause some mental distress but it does not cause the opponent to feel like they are burning so it does not do that much mental damage, or enough mental damage to cause an opponent to faint. You will simply make an image of a fire ball above the opponent and it will seem as though the fire ball is coming from above. You can analyze this as a genjutsu by first questioning how the fire can randomly appear in the sky, as fire needs to be generated somehow. This will give you room to follow up with this as the reason it is an illusion because the fire originated without a physical source. After that, you can just stab yourself and break out. Use this technique mainly to make your opponent look up to distract them from possible attacks from below.
