Crocodile is probably the most mysterious, interesting and well crafted character in One Piece. His attitude, personality, attire, abilities, everything about him is great. Like just about ever mysterious character, Croc has an unknown past and I will try to explain to you all what his past was about based on his personality, appearance and interactions with other characters.

First of al the Croc is a....
...woman. We all heard this dozens of times atleast and its pretty much set in stone. Its the only secret that Ivankov of all people could know about that would make Crocodile nervous. For those of you who doesn't know yet, the original 7 shichibukai(Mihawk, Doflamingo, Kuma, Jimbei, Hancock, Crocodile, Moriah) are based off the 7 heroes of the 1993 Japanese game Romancing SaGa.

Rocbouquet(Hancock)-The queen of an island of warrior woman who has a temptation skill that charms men.

Kujinshi(Moriah)-He steals souls and can create zombies.

Dantarg(Kuma)-A 'tyrant' who modified his body to become stronger.

Bokuohn(Doflamingo)- He controls people like puppets.

Subier(Jinbei)-A half octopus merman who controls the flow of the ocean to use as a weapon.

Noel(Mihawk)-A powerful swordsman with a strict code of honor.

Wagnas(Crocodile)- He doesn't have sand powers, BUT his plot is that he wanted to find an ancient inscription telling the location of a powerful weapon so he could take over a country and he is both male and female. (Something like a male soul possessing a female body.)

Oda also drew Croc as a child, and honestly, he could be called male or female. At Roger's execution, Croc's face wasn't shown. Just the back of his head. Hmmm....I wonder why...

Going to and adventuring the New World
Like hundreds of others, Crocodile was one of the hundreds of pirates inspired by Gol D. Roger during the last moments of his execution. Crocodile wen't to the New World overflowing with confidence and ambition, and faced nothing but shame, turmoil and hardship. While in the turbulent sea, Croc recieved his trademark scar, suffered a crushing defeat at the hands of Whitebeard, and felt unimaginable embarrassment when he was turned into a man by Ivankov. The order these instances occured is unknown.

I personally believe Crocodile, as a woman, stumbled onto Whitebeard in the New World. "She" requested to join Whitebeard's crew, but was told by Whitebeard that only the men in his crew were allowed to fight, as the only women we ever saw on Whitebeard's crew were mere women. Crocodile, a prideful woman, refused to play a gender role, and left Whitebeard. After seeing the Okama on WB's crew, he sought out Iva, the Okama queen. He cut off his hand to prove to Iva that his will was legit, convincing Iva to comply with Croc's desires and turned him into a woman. However, WB still refused him even though he was a man now, causing Croco to hate him and leave the NW after attacking WB in anger, resulting in the scar on his face.

Leaving the New World and returning to 'Paradise' and Alabasta
Crocodile's pride and ambitions were completely crushed. For someone like Crocodile, who relies on himself and gives himself up to no one, being completely helpless in the New World as too much to bare so he fled giving up on his dreams. But he returned to 'Paradise' a changed man. His hatred for the world and his bitterness because of his shame grew, and he wanted nothing other than the world to suffer and remain as ugly as the one that brought him down.
He stages a rebellion in Alabasta and relishes in his ability to turn countrymen against each other. His desire to see the world remain as ugly and unforgiving as the one that crushed him is the only way he can justify giving up on his dreams. At the outset, his plans are meant to accomplish his goal of obtaining a super-weapon, but thematically he’s lashing out against a world that has long since worn him down. It’s an embittered proclamation: if I can’t be “king”, then the “kingdom” sucks, and I’ll do anything to diminish the legitimacy of those who harbor hope of becoming or doing anything meaningful. In the end, he is defeated by Monkey D. Luffy.

A prisoner of Impel Down
Losing to Luffy was the last straw for Crocodile. His pride and ambition was once again shattered and he yet again gave up on his dreams. We saw how he refused to avoid capture from the marines. A broken man, Crocodile was content with living the rest of his days rotting in Impel Down believing he's nothing but a weak failure.

Hearing of the WB war re-lit a fire in Crocodile. The man who probably started his train of shortcomings is now going to war labeled 'War of the Best." Crocodile was filled with hope. When Luffy arrived in Level 6, HE ASKED FOR HELP and OFFERED his assisstance, all for the chance of proving his self worth to himself. The 'War of the Best' will be Crocodile's proving ground.

Marineford and Post-Marineford
Arriving in Marineford rekindled a chunk of Crocodile's pride and he attacked Whitebeard. Even though certain obstacles kept him from continually attack the old man, he still showed a sense of self worth and pride when he SAVED Portgas D. Ace because he didn't want the government to have their way. With that, Crocodile's pride was completely rekindled. Crocodile, who was so weak before, came into the war of the best, fought the best(Jozu, Doflamingo, Mihawk, Akainu) and walked away with injuries. He also succeeded in keeping the WG from having their way. With his pride, self worth and ambition fully restored, a big smile crepted upon his face as he ventured back into the same New World that brought him down before, blooming with new confidence.

What do you guys think? Cool?.....or completely ridiculous and you want to kill me?.....

Crocodile actually left MF with minor injuries. It looked like after Jozu's blow, he didn't receive any extra damage.

That makes alot of sense on why he hates Whitebeard so much(and yet gave a sense of respect and admiration when he yelled "You weren't this weak when you defeated me!") and how he meet Iva. What you said gave more depth to the complex Crocodile. He came to the New World and dreamed of sailing with WB, but his pride and self respect had to be sullied to do so. Even he tried again, he was still rejected and his pride and self worth was completely shattered and he hated the whole world for it. Thanks.

Such horsh*t, everybody knows crocodile is not a women.

Who the f*ck would try to rip a women's face in half?

They don't carry scars across their face you know...

He didn't even meet Ivo until his twenties, when he was colleagues with a Moria and Doflamingo.

None of them would even dignify him of he was a women, nor would Anyone in the series thrash on a women.
