According to Doflamingo, awakening your Devil Fruit means you can affect not only yourself, but the world around you. I'm thinking Crocodile might have awakened the Suna Suna no Mi because he can use his drying powers to turn the world around him into sand by touching the ground and drying it, changing the world around him. Anyone else think Crocodile's drying powers could be the Suna Suna no Mi awakened, or is it just another power of the Devil Fruit that Croc happened to discover?

I'm sure that Crocodile said at one point, he focused more on his DF powers as well didn't he... I think he very well might have awakened them, that right hands power does seem like a rare ability compared to other logia fruit users... That an Blackbeards of course.

Having the ability to change the environment doesn't make you automatically awakened. For example, Gladius can inflate the ground and turn it into an explosion, but he is probably not awakened.
How do you know he's not awakened?

Logias normally produce or become an element, here we see Croc is changing the environment into his element.

Because the Pamu Pamu no Mi grants the user the ability to pop inorganic objects, which is what Gladius did. Several DFs have the ability to affect the environment without being awakened, and the Suna Suna no Mi could be one of them.

Inorganic objects he's in contact with. Last time I checked he wasn't in contact with the cliff on the 2nd level leading up to Flower Fields.

Logias don't directly have the ability to effect the environment.

Plausible, not because of what he's already done, but because of what he's yet to do.

He is also very knowledgeable of devil fruit abilities...

Punk hazards entire climate was changed by 2 logia's

How is Crocodile touching the ground and drying it different from Aokiji touching the ocean and freezing it ?

Or Diamante turning the entire flower field into a flag. Or Lola turning the Sunny into a painting.

Logia and paramecia always had in some extent influence on the surroundings, but Doflamingo just turned buildings into string without coming close to them.

I would accept Crocodile's ability as awakened when he can turn other objects into sand without touching them. Because houses aren't made of string either. Crocodile's drying ability still had limitations as explained in Impel down.

Besides this is doffy's awakening, who knows what other rules there might be to it for different kind of fruits. Maybe Logia have a different effect, because we already seen that Zoan turn to monsters.
