Alright then, let's compare villains shall we?

Madara Uchiha

Madara is the mastermind of the whole, current plot. He was the one to first discover the way to revive the Juubi, achieve the legendary doujutsu known as the Rinnegan and he was stated to create the Uchiha clan. Though, the last comment was retonned it seems. None the less, Madara is a pure evil being. Shaped by the loss of his siblings and the crushing defeat and fact that he lacked the power to defend those he loved.

Not only that, but in the end all their deaths were for nothing. The Uchiha and Senju came together peacefully. Another stinging blow. Madara's reasons for being a villaina are fairly solid. He felt powerless, despite having power. He was shunned by his clan once the Senju and Uchiha came together. And they thought he was such a bad leader, they defected to their arch-rivals.

As for villainous deeds, Madara both falls short and has a few nasty skeletons in his closest. He battled his best friend to what was suppose to be to the death, something that should never happen. He survived, and cloned his friend. Imperfectly, I should add. But the result was Zetsu. Madara later saved the life of Obito Uchiha and signaled his downfall into the same dark abyss that Madara was in. In the end, he died and corrupted Obito. Making or fooling Obito into continuing their goal, with a plan to come back.

Once he was revived, Madara was shown to be an arrogant and powerful shinobi. He destroyed nearly an entire division by himself, fought and toyed with the Gokage and left them on deaths door. This, is where his character gets bad though. Since then, he has done nothing interesting and is just an eye sore. We all know he could be pulling out massive and cool techniques, or offering more to the commentary than "Ha, you ain't Hashirama. No challenge.".

I would rank him, as a villain, as one of the "worst" villains. He has all the reasons to be one, but he is now boring. And he seems to have given up on the decades long plan! Makes zero sense.

Obito Uchiha

While Obito may get a lot of hate, no one can deny that he is a fairly well developed villain. I am NOT saying his reasons are the best. But what he has done as a villain is far better than most antagonists in the series.

The dawn of Tobi, and the start of Obito's life as a villain came after being locked away in a cave with Madara Uchiha and Zetsu clones. Obito's whole dream while in this cave was to be reunited with his teammates, his best friend and love. And just sitting in a cave, forced to heal and slowly train over time was murder to him.

Just imagine his reaction when he discovered that Kakashi and Rin were in danger? He leapt out of the cave, hoping to help them as fast as possible. Injurying himself to try and get out of the cave, I believe. He rushed to the scene of the attack and was shocked to discover a dead Rin with Kakashi's hand through her chest. He went mad and killed the entire enemy troop. After months of only wanting to be with his friends again, he comes back to seeing the love of his young life dead. By the hands of the comrade who he "died" to protect and swore to save her no matter what. He would feel utterly defeated. Not to mention he later learned that Rin would die no matter what. The Sanabi was bound to break out. There was no saving Rin, it seemed. He did go insane here and. . The flip of the coin decision that caused him to attack Konoha and his sensei was random.

I did not enjoy it, and I despised the fact that over Rin, he attacked a village filled with friendly enough faces. Not to mention he later killed his clan, and didn't seem to mind it. His tail spin into chaos was far too.. spontaneous and without good enough reasons. I would have liked a more "built up" reason for being evil.

But, as "Tobi" he has got to be one of the best villains we've seen. "Tobi" was the mysterious and dark figure, lurking behind Pein. Before we learned the secrets of Pein, "Tobi" was ordering him around and STILL acting casual and like a goof ball.

His deceit the entire series as "Tobi" was fantastic. The way he was playing with Sasuke, Naruto, Kakashi. When he confronted and revealed the truth of Itachi to Team 7, I felt as if "Tobi" was doing this to try and make Naruto realize Naruto was never redeeming Sasuke. That he's in too deep, and Nagato's redemption was a fluke. He was always that shady guy, possibly Madara himself, watching things unfold.

He was the man who had plotted for his entire life for this, and was finally taking action. FINALLY doing things. His peak as a villain for me atleast, was the battle against Konan. He was at his prime then. His words, his actions, his speech. The fact he used Izanagi. . And then the confrontation with Nagato's corpse where he let loose a few angered words.

I loved it. During the war, he was great UP until a few chapters before the reveal. The calm, masked figure was losing his cool and the "Obito" personality was coming out. And, while it is getting better, Obito is a bit too whinny for people to like. He lacks that edge he once had.

He's in the top three villains, in my opinion. (Pein, Obito, Orochimaru).

Orochimaru

And we finally get to the fallen Sannin. Orochimaru was the first major villain in this series, and a great one at that. He has always had some dark affinity with him. An aura that you get that makes you know he is plotting something. Since the forest of Death, fans have loved to hate this character. He's just that good.

The main reason he is a villain lurks back to his childhood. His parents died in a ninja war and he was told that they died to protect Konoha. The loss of life hit him hard, but luckily he had Hiruzen as a back up father figure. Later on, in the Second Shinobi War he witnessed the death of Nawaki; Tsunade's younger brother. This hurt him deeply, apparently. Meaning that Orochimaru might have been the sensei to Nawaki, or was rather close to the boy.

And, other than those reasons we know Orochimaru was constantly hurt by the fact that Tsunade was in pain. And if he were the sensei to Nawaki, then Orochimaru would feel all the worse. As it would have been his duty to protect Nawaki. He had, at some point, viewed the death of Dan too. We can't say much about this, other than it tipped Tsunade over and Orochimaru began to lose himself at the fragility of life. This is most likely when Orochimaru began his "research". Though, it was more than likely nothing but learning forbidden techniques at this stage.

As life went on, Orochimaru snapped when he was refused the position of Hokage. Unable to take his father-figures place. Something that he had obviously hungered after and wanted a majority of his life. To the student of Jiraiya, his rival, to a child compared to him. This obviously hurt his ego a grand deal.

His reasoning isn't the best, but it was a long standing thing that I think is. . Better. it feels less rushed and more deeply thought over. No one turns evil in a day, it's a process of falling into the darkness.

As for Orochimaru's actions, well they put him above Tobi. He first brainwashed a doubtful Kabuto and lured him into the darker side of life, much like Madara did to Obito. He then spent his life experimenting on his own body, and practically anyones who he got his hands on. His new goal was to learn every jutsu, to become the ultimate being. Sort of a way to prove himself worthy of the Hokage rank. He might of felt that Hiruzen and the others imagined that Orochimaru was not worthy of the rank. This was his way of proving them wrong.

He then developed an immortal jutsu, as he realized he couldn't learn everything in a single life time. As time went by, he even attacked his home village. Like Obito. The difference here is that he was able to fool a Great Village into attacking with him after he assassinated their Kage, in secret.

He was the first to use the unholy Edo Tensei jutsu in the show, summoning the teachers of Hiruzen. Causing emotional trauma and unsettlement in his former sensei. As pawns, he used those who he had brainwashed into following him.

No life was sacred for him. He cared for no one. Not the Sound genin, Sound four, or even Kimimaro. Kimimaro, his ideal body, thrown away AFTER some disease took his health. And Kimimaro's whole point of living was to serve Orochimaru.

He has zero respect for life. I could add more onto this. But I feel like this more or less covers it without me getting redundant.

He is one of the best villains in the show, in my opinion. His actions are truly only overshadowed or rivaled by Peins.

Each response is rather long. Short version is this:

Madara had potential to be a great villain, Kishi wasted it.
"Tobi" was a great villain, but the "Obito" personality brought him down.
Orochimaru's actions are the most nasty and evil in the series, best out of these three.

How can people say orochimaru is the best villain when all he really wants is to learn all jutsu? At least Obito and madara are trying to take over the world. That's more evil than learning jutsu IMO.
