Couldn't they have done better than poor neji?

Neji was freed from Hinata.

He was freed from being bound to the chose of dying for the main branch.

He chose to die for Hinata and Naruto.

Read the manga, forehead.

I want to see another Hyuga kid that aspires to be Neji and has a rivalry with Metal Lee

then we could get the Neji vs Lee fight we always wanted

Boruto vs Lee it's gonna happen

If he shows nejis hand speed I'll be happy, a mix of nejis striking speed with sasukes mobility would be amazing

And Minato's FTG, jesus

Think about Neji's ideology about fate.

His role as a Branch member was to lay down his life for the main family. This happened in the end but he did it for Hinata (and Naruto) as friend and family rather than servitude.

Just like his pops. Hizashi didn't die for the clan. He died for his brother. He chose to die for Hiashi and Neji chose to die for Hinata & Naruto.

I really hate how people act like Neji's death wasn't meaningful. Yeah it was for the sake of the ship but whether it's intentional or not his death is pretty deep.

Fair enough, I never bothered to think about how hizashi died as well, good catch and it does bring some meaning to it, even if I still don't agree with the death

Sai would have been a better candidate truth be told. He had the mentality of abandoning his comrades, like when he let Sakura's body fall off of the Heaven & Earth bridge, so him dying for Naruto would make more sense. Not to mention Sai was more relevant in Part 2 than Neji, thereby making him dying more appropriate. It also wouldn't force us to watch the way he was humiliatingly side lined when the true Team 7 returned, which just went to show he truly was nothing but fodder replacement for Sasuke.

Still holding out hope for Edo Neji and/or Neji flashbacks.

I dont agree with the death either. I wanted to see the dynamic between hinata, hanabi, and neji as adults and with the kids.

But there are worse ways to go in this series.

His death wasn't meaningful at all because he serve nothing more but a plot device fodder. He should've died by Kidomaru fight since there's really no point in bringing him back to Shippuden if he's only there to die.

Sai's a decent candidate, but it would of been impactless. I can think of some people that like sais abilities, or think he's ok(I think inojin is weirdly cool tbh) but I can't think of anyone that gives a sh t about sai himself sad to say

Hiashi should've died saving his daughter, Then passing the clan onto both Neji and Hinata, Bridging the gap between the Main and branch families, Thus keeping the whole "next generation" thing going.

Almost completely ignoring neji then killing him off was stupid and such a waste of future character building for both Neji and the rest of the hyuga clan.

Everything is a plot device.

His death to kidomaru would have been meaningless.

Hinata should've died and driven Naruto to try harder and get killed off as well.
Naruto and or Sasuke should dies after Madara solo'd him even Narutos revival was pure arsepull. That would've driven Sasuke to work with Shikamaru and use the pot to seal Madara and the beasts.
They could then effect a monument to Naruto and fodderata.

Except that alot of characters have significant roles in the story and not just purely for plot devices unlike Neji who is entirely based on.

His death to Kidomaru would have more meaningful and impact to the story when its entirely based on his growth and his death which is centered around his self introverted and his symbolic freedom to forge his own path rather than shafted him for 500+ chapters only to die by a cupid out of nowhere.

Naruto left me a bad taste on my mouth. Boruto is doing better job.

Tsunade, Gaara and Kakashi are good picks OP. Unfortunately Gaara and Kakashi already "died" so it would feel less impactful.

Tsunade on the other hand had more than enough screentime compared to Neji.

Maybe instead of Hinata shielding Naruto, she should have pulled him out of the way.

Significant roles apply to only a handful of characters.

If he died to Kidomaru he would have died not understanding his father. Everyone was shafted in Naruto except for a handful of characters. Anything that made them unique or useful was often shafted.

Took 500+ chapters for Ino. In fact, she's one of the few that actually had something about her that Naruto and others didn't overshadow. Her mind link. But that's another discussion entirely.

The point im trying to make is him dying to Kidomaru would have probably made a bigger impact back then as a k11 would have died and made us realize anyone could die. But ultimately it would have been a meaningless death for neji and the readers.
