Shikamaru is nowhere close to Naruto or Sasuke's level. He can't compete only with his intelligence. You're being bias if you're saying that Shikamaru is able to defeat Naruto and Sasuke one on one; just look at the difference in power. Intelligence can only go so far.

Naruto is stupid compared to Shikamaru but he defeated Pain (6 realms). Why? Because of his POWER. Do you think Shikamaru could have done the same? No. He may be one of the smartest characters but Kishi has made the two main characters TOO strong.

Edit: His fight vs. Asuma was not impressive on his account. That fight was all about Chouji. Unless Kishi writes something to say that he is Kage lvl strength wise, there is no way he can beat any top characters in this war. I.E the Kages, Naruto, Sasuke, Kabuto.

Maybe if his father died in the war, it would motivate him just like it motivated him when Asuma died. Then he would step up, and Naruto would be a traveling person like Ero-Sennin, and be himself, maybe adopt a student or something xd
