To begin off my theory, we have to start with the man at the center of it... Itachi
Why was this man so great? Honestly, he was the most selfless individual who strove to ensure the protection of his village at all cost --- even if it meant betraying his own family. And we know that family is very important to the Uchiha clan. Just look at Madara and Izuna and the rest of them.
Although he obliterated his entire clan, we know he loved his little brother dearly...
But we also know that Itachi was willing to kill his brother in order to complete his mission of protecting Konoha as well. He was so enamored with his cause that he even would have Sasuke taken out if it jeopardized his mission to take care of Konoha.
This would later change though after he would meet his brother again due to being revived by Edo Tensei. They worked together to defeat Kabutomaru and I'm assuming this refounded partnership swayed his attitude towards his lifelong goal; his brother was simply too precious to him to kill.
But why was Itachi so relaxed with the notion of death? He faked his own battle with his brother to give him some closure so that he could become stronger and go back to Konoha revered by the villagers.
I believe Itachi was okay with dying and leaving his brother alive, even if it meant the deaths of the innocent because he had a back-up plan.
Itachi was always ahead of the curve. Just ask Tobi...
I believe that Sarada is Itachi's daughter!
Now hold one, this is where SPOILERS from this weeks chapter come in so if you don't want to hear it... LEAVE!!!
Now, the conflict with my theory is Sarada's age. If her father was Itachi, she must have been conceived (meaning as an egg in the mother, she didn't have to actually be born yet) while he was still around. There are actually numerous explanations for this;
We know the war and all of the events including Sasuke vs. Danzo, Gokage meeting, and the Fourth Ninja War occurred in about the same year as well as the new Naruto movie. The "Next Generation" could've all had their kids following the events of the war which is common in real life scenarios as well where after war, there is usually a population explosion.
TLDR; Sarada is Itachi's daughter. He had planned from the beginning that even if Sasuke were to turn evil and he'd have to be killed, their clan would still exist as he would leave a progeny behind. Itachi was very satisfied with sacrificing himself. This could perhaps be the reason; he knew he had left a legacy behind... Sarada

- We know that Sarada is not in the birth registry of Konoha as she spoke to Shizune while her mother is in a coma...
- Furthermore, Sasuke did not claim her as his own and neither did Sakura, BUT, she is still listed as an Uchiha!
- It is also noted that Sarada was born OUTSIDE of Konoha. Why would she be born outside of Konoha if Sakura was her mother? It doesn't make sense.
- To make things even more complicated, her "mother" doesn't seem to know jack shit about her own "husband" which makes her origin even weirder and muddled.
Now, the conflict with my theory is Sarada's age. If her father was Itachi, she must have been conceived (meaning as an egg in the mother, she didn't have to actually be born yet) while he was still around. There are actually numerous explanations for this;
- She was "conceived" right before Itachi went to go meet Sasuke for their duel.
- She was "conceived" "around the time" where Itachi and Naruto had their little bout.
