Could Gaara beat Itachi?

^ This is exactly what I was thinking, people always justify their answer with "in the desert", theres plenty more landscape. Deidara already spanked the poor lad, had it not been for Chiyo he would have been dead.

Well, Gaara is the most odd character in NVerse.....I mean he doesn't even use his body like a ninja in any battle, just flicking his fingering and doing that break dance thingy....
A ninja(sarcasm) who uses only SAND....It's obvious that in his favorable conditions, he can beat anyone, except those NINJAS (real) who can get themselves out of the clutches of SAND...

But Itachi's intelligence and genjutsu mastery give him a sharp edge here...

Probably Itachi is just too fast for him. In addition, we have seen itachi as one of the strongest characters in the whole Naruto manga series. It is true that gaara is pretty successful for his age considering he hold the kage tittle of the sand village, but on the other hand itachi was pretty awesome at the same age.

Also sasuke has said that susanoo's defense is better than gaara's sand. Not to forget the ultimate sealing sword that itachi's susanoo wields. With that thing he can beat nearly everyone. Of course it uses up a lot of chakra, but Itachi has the right intelligence and ninja capabilities of successfully managing his situations.

As for me Itachi outclasses gaara in every aspect. Long rage combat could be a little tough for him, but with his speed he would get near in not time. (his susanoo could be useful in long range combat, and also amateratsu if gaara does not succeed on pretecting himself) A major factor is that gaara is completely unprotected against genjutsy. Itachi is able to use both forbidden Uchiha genjutsus, Izanaga and the other one that he used on Kabuto.

Yeah itachi owns it. This does not mean that I am underestimating gaaras potential and his ninja capabilities. I would have to agree with some of the comments with the fact that we have seens zero ninjutsu from him . . . that's pretty sad for a ninja.

I completely agree with you, especially about the taijutsu part. I mean, we haven't even seen a single punch from gaara.

Ama is an easy sell for me. Even if it manages to beat Gara's main sand defense people are forgetting his sand armor. If he is hit he can shed the sand that covers his body easily to avoid taking a lot of damage from it. Gaara could win in a desert scenario with mid difficulty.
The only reason Deidra was able to get an attack in on Gaara was simple because he exhausted his chakra and passed out trying to save the village. Even the few small explosions that hit Gaara would not have been enough to defeat him. He just was not able maintain his sand armor and his sand defense after saving the village. Also it distracted him long enough to get an attack through his defense. Otherwise I think Deidra would have been easily defeated. Tsukyomi is a joke, how many times has that been successful in the recent chapters of manga.
After saying all of that and being a Gaara fan I will move onto my biggest point. Gaara cannot win against Itachi. Gaara outranks Itachi is defense and chakra. Itachi's best attributes are not his eyes, genjutsu or ninjutsu. Itachi's best quality is his intelligence. I believe this a lone defeats Gaara. I believe Gaara could defeat Itachi in a desert scenario, but I don't believe Itachi would go all gung ho and charge Gaara on his own terrain. Itachi would never fight under this circumstance he would merely delay and withdraw to a more suitable location. Itachi would never go into a fight without a plan or strategy that he did not think would win for him. He had enough forethought to give Naruto something to help against Sasake. He was able to break the impure world jutsu and then remove it from its wielder. He has understood more about the war than most. He was suspicious of Tobi enough to implant a defense for Sasake against him. Itachi simply thinks so many moves ahead that for Gaara to keep up it would almost remind me of the fight between Hidan and Shikamaru. This coming from a Gaara fan, i simple give way to much credit for intelligence because the manga has shown us time and time again that the strongest, fastest, person and the best ninjutsu does not always win. The person with the best strategy and the best counter seem to be the sharpest tools. Even Naruto showed that even though Neji was stronger than him in almost every category in part 1, that a simple strategy that your opponent does not see can lead to their defeat.

Sand eye handles sharingan genjutsu from itachi,he isnt messing with gaara's brain chakra by simply looking at an eye of sand which wud be hidden anyway,in a dessert gaara beats itachi soundly,he cant use his ms without pain anyway and gaara easily blocked amaterasu from sasuke,sand sensing/sand eye counters genjutsu,totsuka isnt penetrating his normal defences which blocked 5 madara swords at once,itachi cant even hold it for long anyway. Gaara transformed a forest into a sand box in seconds,getting more sand isnt a problem.peoe keep talking about itachi's intelligence as if gaara is stupid,u tink he cant fight smartly or what?. He dosent know of gaara's techniques but gaara knows all his ms techs,as well as all info on itachi which konoha has,this isnt edo itachi,this is ms,sick itachi. Izanami is useless if the person is true to himself,itachi cant do izanagi,gaara can easily attack him from below while making a destraction technique like sand hail from above,am pretty sure itachi wont last long against 5 madara wood clones with complete susanoos that have moukton and rinnegan. Gaara manhandles itachi in a dessert and beats him or looses high diff outside.
