When Avengers came out it was unprecedented and a HUGE hit. But because it was unprecedented there were a lot of doubts and concerns pre-release. I was giving it a 51/49 in favor of success up until I saw the origional in the theatre and loved it from beginning to end.
BUT, now that they've finished the sequel and will be releasing it in a few weeks, such concerns come back--but not because of being unprecedented and the first of its kind, but rather making the mistakes that many sequels of successful movies have made over the years.
1) Cockiness. Avengers made SOOOOOOO much money and was such a big hit that even though it guaranteed a sequel, such a success has often lead to an attitude of "it will be an automatic hit--let's try something new (and likely stupid)"
Example, a movie comes out (Batman, as a random pic) and it hit BANK! Might not be the first sequel to come out (Batman Returns) but as the train keeps moving (Batman Forever) it builds momentum and gets blown to hell (Batman & Robin) when it hits a pile of crap (joel schumacher). Why? People got comfortable after a success. Reckless. Lazy. Bad judgement. They use past success as fuel to think that just a little of what made it great would result in the same thing falling into their lap.
Could Avengers Age of Ultron do the same? Will the writing, acting, editing, etc fall behind after they bathed in so much money and "I told you so" 3 years ago? That definitely WOULDN'T be unprecedented.
2) Focusing too much one one character/the big moneymaker. Now, I know that money is why they make movies, but too much of something is a bad thing (hence, TOO MUCH). And one complaint that I hear (and usually share) is that they shed too much light in one specific actor, aspect or character. In this case, of coarse, Iron Man.
Joss Wheaton literally grabbed RDJ by the shoulder, sat him down and said right to his face "this is not Iron Man 3--it's a team movie and not about you" while starting the first Avengers. But after hearing that Ironman is taking half of Captain America's movie (Civil War) and watching all of the AoU trailers or reading the news reports online... I feel that they've veered off track of that.
I mean, I know they're going to shine the most popular character and actor, but RDJ/Tony Stark's ego is a vacuum--hell, a black hole--that demands to be the center of the universe--and they've been feeding it too much. One of the reasons he has half of Captain America 3 is because RDJ told them if he JUST had a bit part and didn't split the title of major character in someone else's movie, he'd call it quits for the Marvel Franchise. They relished his ego and invested more in him and his character than any of the others--then he used it as a flaming noose around their neck. Let's face it guys and gals... there should be no surprise if AoU and CA:CW were just renamed versions of Iron Man 4 and 5. And honestly, that's why I got tired of the Xmen series and LOVED Xmen: First Class. No wolverine, and it took that massive load off of plot and character to divey it up to everyone else.
Those are just the first 2 that come to mind and I'm still tired from third shift, so please share your input on how much you look forward to if this movie shines--and if it doesn't, then share what you think are the main reason(s) why that would happen. But don't get me wrong--I'm REALLY looking forward to Avengers: Age of Ultron. I'm just a little less optimistic this time around.
