also itachis more useful as an ally than an enemy so why kill him off.

Itachi is a dangerous enemy to have. If he turned on Obito and managed to get Konoha involved, Akatsuki's plans would have never worked. But if he did that then Obito would have had no reason not to target Sasuke for his own nefarious ends. They essentially had leverage one each other and wouldn't use it unless they were had a good reason.

Even if Itachi got Konoha involved, Obito would send Nagato who would destroy as he did, he is solo god after all haha. Obito had more of a leverage, if Itachi doesn't hold up his part of the deal then Konoha and Sasuke are opened targets. Obito only used Itachi for his own ends since he knew Itachi was dying from his disease and he never hindered Obito at all. If Itachi knew about Obito secrets then he would try to kill him on a way that might work, not in a fight but in traps. Itachi can't fight a full on fight without risking death as his MS jutsus takes a lot out of him and Susanoo actually killed him with his sicken body.
