Ban that shit. If the Natzi flag is banned in Germany why keep the Confederate flag that reminds us of our hardship African Americans had too endure

Why keep a flag they lost they should have no say in this IMO

I disagree with every aspect of the confederate states flag, but that said, in the land of the free everyone should be allowed to express their ideals and beliefs. Why aren't we banning black panther flags, Nazi's or any group that promotes hate, why just this one? Plus if we ban the display of these flags and things like this that allow others to see their neighbors as the hateful people they are how will we know if we're standing next to someone who hates our guts? At least the way it is now we can identify those who hate others based on outdated principles.

We should probably get rid of it just because it's a hateful reminder of some pretty horrible circumstances.

Yeah it should be banned (atleast from official areas or state flags) but banning it won't make people any less racist. Maybe some of them will realize how ****ed up even something symbolic is. At the end of the day real change will not be cosmetic it will be in minds.

It should be banned, left in the past with slavery itself. It may not change any mindsets, but as long as people keep their bigotry to themselves like before, everything should be fine.
And it's not "banned" so to say, but they're pulling them down from institutional grounds that represent ALL people and banning them from major retailers. So now an unemployed redneck can start selling Confederate flags and rake in huge profits from those who are butthurt by the decision to take it down.

Displaying those flags on government buildings is like hanging on to a past that the country recognized as being wrong a long time ago. Get rid of them.

Sure ban a flag. When is the stifling going to stop ?
Next thing you know they would be banning women from running nude on streets. After that, they would be banning the use of excessive force and arms. Then what ?Do you actually want that to happen ? This actually discourage a foreigner, such as myself, to visit America, the land of the free ....

As a result of this historic action, the nation will heal racially and the economy will boom.

Seriously now. If the shooter hadn't posed with the Confederate flag but this was still an act of racism would we be having this debate? Should the American flag be removed as well? Should the Thomas Jefferson memorials be removed? Should we get rid of all Gold's gyms?

There's no reason to keep it up, so take it down.

People should be allowed to do what they want on their own property, but to have our own government fly the confederate flag is just idiotic. Take it down and anyone that wants to fly it on their property can do so.

I don't live in the US nor like he US's policy. But the confederate flag has for all I know alot of history and is pretty cool looking flag. I think since there are alot of people who like the flag it should just be legal to keep it in front of your house or where ever you want. I mean if you ban the flag how can you still call he USA a country which is known for "freedom".

Having a lot of history is not something positive... And that flag has a really bad history. I mean really it can not be romanticisized anyway whatsoever.

@bold The flag promotes something directly opposite of freedom. It represents the people who once wanted to continue slavery for their own economic benefits and supremacist ideas; the usage of that symbol promotes lack of freedom much more than banning it.

I'm not an American, so I don't really care what they do with that flag, but honestly said by banning that flag you don't solve anything. In fact you might even make things worse.

By banning it you take away any kind of possibility for that flag to change its meaning. Now it automatically will be unified with the meaning of representing racism and it's impossible to reverse it. During the time it wasn't banned however it opened the door of gaining new meanings, like for example the series The Dukes of Hazzard. It has been a long while since I ever saw that series, but as far as I remember that flag wasn't particularly associated with racism and became part of the show, but now I heard they have to remove that flag of all their merchandise...

They pretty much condemned that flag to forever be associated with racism in the southern States, which in a different way can be described as that they have just given American racists a new symbol to gather under. Banning that flag will not remove racism and in fact will only reinforce it. Someone like that shooter in that church is not suddenly going to distance himself from that flag, he will only gain more affinity for it.

So by banning it they're pretty much strengthening the thing they banned it for.

I don't care for it. I've seen a neighbor in my area with it in his yard it doesn't bother me in the slightest way. I don't think it should be banned because if it were, the people that support it may lash out.
It's a flag, nothing more. I say leave and ignore it.
