I haven't been on this site long, at least as a member anyway, but one thing that I've seen frequently here when people talk about the predicament the current Kages is that Tsunade has to die during this war. And the most popular reason for it is so Naruto can become Hokage. This pisses me off to no end. There's no reason for it. Someone please give me one good, valid reason for why ANY of the Kage have to die. The Kage doesn't need to die just to pass the title and duties along. Just look at Hiruzen and Minato! Minato became the Fourth Hokage when Hiruzen was still alive. Why can't the same be said for Tsunade and Naruto?
All five of the current Kages have something to live for and do after this war. Tsunade will most likely want to retire after being bisected like this and because she's used her secret technique so much. She's a Senju AND an Uzumaki, that's something people seem to forget. And while the Uzumaki bloodline isn't dominant in her, it's still there. Meaning she can live for a long time. So what's to stop her from retiring from the office of the Hokage and training a new line of healer ninjas? Or passing along her slug techniques to Sakura like Jiraiya did with the Toads and Naruto. Or just gambling again and enjoying life? Her death would do nothing and would just be another pointless shock death.
The Raikage, Ay, has changed vastly due to the efforts of Bee and Naruto. He has a new view on things, and I strongly believe that after the war he would want to spend a lot more time with his brother. After the war there'll need to be a strong ninja to keep the nations from disbanding and be around to dissuade possible betrayers. He also has his techniques that he can pass along, like what the 3rd Raikage did with Darui. His Lightning armor and speed are valuable assets you'd want to have around in the future.
The Kazekage, Gaara, also has a renewed belief to think about. The words he received from his father the 4th were enough to bring him to tears. He would most likely want to spend more time with his family in Temari and Kankuro and maybe even seek someone out to be in a relationship. Not to mention the ideals he holds and how he can help others keep and remember their's, such as Onoki. He also has the ability to talk easily about difficult matters, as observed by Mei, and would be able to help make difficult decisions post-war on the political front. And he probably would like nothing more than to attend Naruto's initiation ceremony to the office of Hokage.
The Mizukage, Mei, probably has one of the best reasons and the most to live for. Something that she's brought up on more than one occasion, and that being marriage. She's young and would probably want to start up a family as the Mizukage and try to pass along her unique Kekkei Genkais. Not to mention with Ao gone, she would probably have to console and guide Chojuro on what to do next. Plus with the missing Seven Swords now accounted for after being summoned onto the battlefield, she could try and jump start the Seven Mist Ninja Swordsman again, most likely with Suigetsu's help. Although it might not be the most pure-blooded generation, considering Bee possesses Samehada and Omoi has Kiba. But that might help boost cooperation between villages and strenghten ties between the Mist and Cloud villages.
Finally the Tsuchikage, Onoki, is the more difficult one to discuss with him already having a foot in the grave due to age. However, he should pass naturally in my opinion. Thanks to his renewed values from Gaara, he might be eager to instate new laws to prevent his village becoming too distrusted again in the future, since they utilized Akatsuki in the past. Plus he would probably want to hand-pick his replacement and try to pass along the will of stone to him/her as well as attempt to leave behind the Dust Style he has as well.
So in conclusion, please don't wish for the deaths of the Kages. The reasons for them to live far outweigh the reasons for them to die on the battlefield. And if you do want it to happen, don't just say it. Give reasons, and for Onoki, don't just say it's because he's old. And don't just say Tsunade needs to die to vacate the office of Hokage. Those kinds of deaths are disrespectful to the character, their fans, and the fanbase in general.
But tell me what you think. Are my reasons valid/good to let each particular Kage live? Do you have your own to give? Or are you the opposition that believes they should die? If so then state why and tell me about it.
