The reason Gaara beat Trollkage or 2nd Mitzukage is due to him fighting his father first and gaining his gold dust, if he didn't have that he wouldn't have won simple as that

No Gaara would lose to Trollkage the only reason he won was due to using his fathers gold dust

Commending Gaara for protecting himself and everyone else from the blast, the Mizukage reminded him that the situation would continually repeat itself if the clone wasn't stopped. Observing the ensuing clash, he states that despite Gaara's efforts and with his position exposed, it was now too late as another explosion was imminent and his sand would still be unable to restrain the clone. However, the Second was visibly shocked when the clone was captured and furthermore doesn't explode, yet after seeing it covered in a layer of gold, he suspected that the Gold Dust left behind by Gaara's father was responsible. This was confirmed by Gaara's explanation of how he incorporated the gold onto the clone, which melted and slowed it down, before covering it in sand saturated by hail to prevent the clone from heating up again. Upon hearing this, the Mizukage beamed at Gaara, stating that he was indeed a "golden egg"
Please remember that Gaara was with others like Ohnoki. And tired from previous battle. It's not a fair assessment to say TrollKage >Gaara cause of what we've seen. It's debatable to say that Gaara could have defeated him, without the gold dust since Gaara's 3rd counters genjutsu, Gaara fooled the Mizukage with sand clones before and Gaara's actually gotten better since that fight.

Trollkage's Watery Oily Substance counteracted Gaara's sand for the most part, Trollkage said himself Gaara's sand wouldn't have shielded him from the blast he used his Father's Gold Dust to get the win, if you'd like to explain how he'd win fine but until then Trollkage for the win
