Rasengan is meant to smash and blow objects back...

Chidori is meant to pierce/slice/cut... So Naruto Rasengan was only doing what is was made for imo...

no rasengan is used to grind and explode. Chidori is pierce.

Sasuke useing chidori would pierce a hole in rasengans chakra sphere(what holds the violently rotateing chakra inside)

Sasuke useing chidori from above, would make him lose, as the rasengan would explode and knock him way back in the air(where falling he would sustain some serious injury)

Im not saying rasengan> chidori persay, just clearing up your misguided misconception.

The destroying of the water tanks, was purely, just shown to further fuel sasukes inferiority complex, he was getting from watching naruto get on his level so fast. It was not representative or the actual power of the techniques.
