There have been a ton of threads the past few days about Itachi basically still being the villian in this series. I think people are not looking at this from a bigger perspective.
One, Itachi grew up during a war era. He saw much death at a very young age.
That can mess with anyone at the age he experienced war, what was it four?
Two, because Itachi grew up around death he grew to have a strong desire to prevent war, to prevent so much death-something he did not wish to ever see again.
Three, Itachi knew that if the Uchiha staged an attack against the leaf there would be severe casualties. Something he did not want to see in his village. And because the Hidden Leaf will be in battle, other rival nations would use that chance to attack the hidden leaf, basically killing everybody anyway.
So Itachi had to choose, Fight with his clan and start a war for his clans ideals, or with his own hands, kill off his clan and prevent all out war. Which was more imporant, the lives of his clan, probably no more then a few dozen maybe a hundred, or or lives of the entire nation and other warring nations. Itachi chose to kill the clan.
Ok now some say, "well he didn't have to kill the innocent kids". Im going to explain why that isn't so.
We all know the Uchiha are known for liking battle, like war. the senju were known to be peaceful-opposite of Uchiha. So the elders couldn't take the chance that the kids will grow up having a grudge against the village and attack in the future....cough sasuke..... and that is why they had to die also.
With all this being said, I can't see Itachi not being noble in this situation. He did everything he did to protect more lives then would have been lost if he did not kill the clan. A hard decision, but it had to be done.
