I assume a lot of you have read the LotR series, but what other books from before you were born?

Anyone read Dante, Ovid, or Virgil?
How about Twain, Poe, or Wells(either)?

My favorites are Paradise Lost and The Inferno.

Poe is one of my favorites, despite my love for classical, more lyric, poetry.

Also, I am a proud owner of Dante's "Divine Comedy" illustrated by Gustave Doré. A masterpiece.

In my opinion Ovid's best is Metamorphoses although everyone is worshiping Ars Amatoria, don't know why, maybe the title is more catchy.
Few people know that it is in Virgil's Aeneid that we get to know the ending of the Trojan war and not in the Odyssey. A must read for all classic lovers.

I have read Twain & Wells of course, but they are not my favorites; don't even get to my personal top ten. For me, Gabo is irreplaceable.

I agree about Ovid. Metamorphoses all the way. The story of Pyramus and Thisbe was the inspiration for Romeo and Juliet. In fact, that's the play the troop is putting on in A Midsummer Night's Dream.

One of my favorite sculptures is a story from the Inferno. The Uggolino in the Met in NY.

I was just wondering about this, because a lot of people posting here say.... Kishi ripped off this, and soandso ripped off that. Allusion is one of the things that makes literature great. It seemed that no one around here realizes that "it's all been done" before.

Glad to see some people with a sense of history.

About Inferno, I was always fascinated by the fact that the 9th circle hosts the worst sin/crime of all, treachery. If you think about it, it's way beyond it's time. Amazing insight!

I've read Twain, Poe and Wells; I must confess I prefer Twains's light hearted approach over Poe's darker style, if you know what I mean; in all honesty my true classical love is towards Dumas, in my eyes he's a master of the art of story telling, my favourite has to be "The Count of Monte Christou" I'm fascinated by the portrayal of the emotional complexity Dumas displays in Edomond Dantes, I see Dantes character as the embodiment of passion itself.

Apart from that I love Russian illustrations especially by Leo Tolstoy; "Mother" is intensely logically charged publication, so much so that, the the reader cannot but help to sympathise with the socialist idealism or completely hate the concept, unlike the Dumas and Twain and Wells Tolstoy tells the story and leaves room for the reader to make up their own minds.

In terms of ancient literature, I've read Odyssey and Iliad English illustrations (then again who hasn't)

Kushan--have you seen the anime Gankutsuou? Very cool retelling of Monte Cristo.

I used to teach college English, so yeah...classics. I like some. XD Totally hooked on Le Morte D'Arthur, just to name one.

Is it that kind of thing where if you've read the original work, then tried to see a remake, you get disappointed b/c it's totally 'not right'?? Or is it something else? Just curious--I haven't seen the manga myself, and I actually saw the anime before reading the book It is definitely a different story; in a way it take Dumas' work the way one would tale maybe a myth or a legend, and does it's own version of the tale. (I'm posting this for you, Kushan, but also for anyone else who might be interested.)

But I can get that way, too, sometimes, seeing "remakes"--parts of the LotR movies bothered me (although overall I think a good job was done of them and I think Jackson did as good a job as could have been done by anyone) because I was so familiar with and loved the original.

Anyway. he anime is a little difficult to watch at first, owing to its artistic style, but I consider it among the best anime I have ever watched--of course, that's just my opinion
