So I had a random thought, which comes with some questions;
1. how often are the chuunin exams held?
2. is there a limit to how many you can fail?

The above questions relate to my thought as I was wondering how all of the konoha rookies became chuunin during the time skip. Seeing as following naruto's departure I would assume that the rookies would than take part in the next exam (since the last one was forfited) how did they all make it to the finals. Furthermore how did they all make it to the finals when the sand siblings would have been back? Also since you need a 3-man team how did sakura graduate? Did she team up with Ino and Choji (thats a pretty crap team)?

So many questions but if you can answer some it would be appreciated.:D

I would assume it'd be done once a year, as graduating from the Academy would logically happen every year.

i think i remember hearing that there are other ways of becoming a Chunnin rather than passing the whole exam.

It doesn't make since to have an army of thousands of Chunins while only promoting 18 or so a year to chunin rank

I wanted to know how it was that Kabuto hadn't passed for so long. And how did no one notice him?

I would say that many may not have done the exam as rank isn't always given by sitting the exam/passing.
Sometimes ninja are observed and given rank based on actions. Maybe some got them that way.

Twice a year. And I know it I don't think it. They haven't talked about limits yet. But i can't imagine there would be one. They want as many Chuunin's as possible.

WTW You can only become Chuunin by taking the exam as far as we have been told. You don't have to win the whole thing but you have to get to the last round. You can loose the first match you fight but if you we're smart ( As in Shikamaru's case ) Or skilled you can still pass.

They probably took it more than once. The first time around the Sand Siblings and a few others like Neji, Lee and Shino probably made it all the way through.

Then the following exam the rest made it because these monsters already passed.

Keep in mind you don't necessarily have to win the final battles to become Chuunin. The decision to promote candidates to Chuunin are done by taking other things into consideration. Things like leadership qualities, insight in battle, etc. That's why even though Shikamaru lost to Temari he still was the only one to become Chuunin.
