So during the first part of the third round of the Chuunin exams, we saw the characters "randomly" paired up to fight against each other.
Why it wasn't random
This is what I propose: Write down the names of all 20 contestants and make actual random matchups, and see the results of the fight and how it would affect the plot.
These are the 20 contestants of this round
These were my results
1) Kankuro vs Lee
Not a bad matchup, however, Lee wins pretty easily. On the off chance Lee is forced to use secondary Lotus, Kankuro would be dead
2) Choji vs Gaara
Nice knowing you Choji
3) Kiba vs Yoroi
Yoroi is the chakra sucking guy who fought Sasuke. He was a challenge to Sasuke because of the whole curse mark thing, but I think Kiba's speed and power would win. This one is a bit debatable though
4) Hinata vs Kin
Hinata would probably lose. She lacks the motivation and kin is ruthless. Also Kin uses needles and which are good against close combat fighters like Hinata
5) Sasuke vs Temari
Not a bad matchup, I could see it going both ways. In theory, Temari's wind would strengthen Sasuke's fire (according to Yamato). If Sasuke managed to get close he would win, but Temari has a prett good chance too.
6) Shikamaru vs Tenten
Tenten was infamiliar with Shikamaru's ability, so he would be able to trap her and beat her. However, Tenten's attacks are stronger and faster than Kin's were. I think Shikamaru would win, but it could be argued in Tenten's favor
7) Neji vs Dosu
Dosu's SOund attack is dangerous, but I think it is pretty clear that Neji would easily over power and destroy him
8) Ino vs Shino
It rhymes! Shino wins obviously. He could even kill Ino if he felt like it, though he probably wouldn't
9) Misumi vs Zaku
I think Zaku's range would give him the advantage, but we know too little about these characters
10) Naruto vs Sakura
Pretty convenient actually. Naruto would win if he actually tried to hurt her.
Why it wasn't random
Either the computer knew the plot or someone was controlling it (Kishi) because these match ups were anything but random.
1) Hinata vs Neji, random my ass
2) Ino vs Sakura. Not only are they childhood friends but the two weakest people in the exams who would have been easily defeated by anyone else but each other. Pretty convenient.
Gaara vs Rock Lee: The opposite of the last one, the 2 strongest people in the exams, who would have beaten anyone except each other.
1) Hinata vs Neji, random my ass
