In part 1 he was this gag character that no one could take seriously, but at the end he surprised everyone by sacrificing himself for his friends in an extremely badass moment. His story was suddenly heartbreaking, as you realize no one gave him respect and Shikimaru had to stick up for him but in the end he still died for the sake of the mission which is the most respectful death a ninja can have.

But then he didn't die and returned to being an annoying human bowling ball with stupid jutsus and personality. If his personality became cooler after that scene and he got a new jutsu that was less ridiculous it would have been fine but he should have died there and his character would be as beloved as characters like Lee. His spotlight in the war arc was undeserved and just a rehash of what happened in part 1 except without the tragedy and emotion. I would have rather seen Ino have the spotlight, Kishimoto neglects his female characters besides Tsunade.

Choji is that one fat character you have to have in every show. Except Kishi didn't do a good job with him.

Big people are harder for artist to draw, they are too lazy to spend time on each body part smh

I personally think his personality got better during the war arc.
I even like adult chouji a lot

But he did do a good job with him once.

He had his peak, but then it went downhill as you said. He had potential, but then again, every character had potential at some point in time. Except Sakura of course.

i completely agree. you cant believe how pissed i was when kakashi "died" against pain to save hi fat ass.... kakashi also almost died saving his fat ass against kakuzu and hidan... choji is along with hinata my most hated char by far. i whish they both died during the war... him during the sasuke retrieval arc

Mehhh I think Part 2 had much better set pieces and awe, but Part 1 was more tear jerking and definitely struck a better balance between giving different characters the spotlight.

Yeah he went from sympathic underestimated hero to an overgrown crybaby.

While choking dying in part 1 would've been a great way for him to go I still liked him in part 2

Farting Naruto was a gag but that doesn't make Naruto a gag character, there's a difference. Choji was a gag character until he got serious at the end of part 1, then he went back to being a gag character, which is what ruined him for me.

For example Goku was a gag character at the start of Dragon Ball, but he definitely wasn't during Dragon Ball Z, however there were still reoccurring gags associated with his character he was still supposed to be taken seriously during dramatic scenes.

No. the point I was making is that Naruto by Masashi Kishimoto doesn't really use ''gag characters''.

dragonball is full of them. Dr. briefs, oolong, yajirobe, Korin, puuaru, Guldo, Lunch, master roshi etc.

choji was a properly developed character, who displayed emotional growth in maturity & in mastery of ninja arts, just like team 7 members did
