Is it just interchangeable? I had noticed when I watched Naruto fight Sasuke years ago, that Sasuke's technique was in a spherical form like Rasengan, yet is usually a blade that follows and flows through the hand without shape. Just remembered about it now.

The shape is determined by the user. Sasuke can make chidori swords, needles etc.

Also, according to mangafacts, Raikiri=Chidori. I have proven so many times.
