Chidori was originally a name of a sword that was handed down to a Samurai and unfortunately, while taking shelter from a thunderstorm under a tree he was struck by lightning and apparently he used his chidori sword to cut the thunder god within the bolt of lightning and after that event, he renamed his chidori to raikiri - lightning cutter. That would be the precipice for "hence the name".
