Scars

Steven and Ruairi casually walked down the street towards their school, both of them with their hands in their pockets. Steven looked fed up and very tired but he was nothing compared to Ruairi, he was a wreck. Some of his buttons were un-done, half of his shirt was hanging down covering the dark black of his school trousers, he was in the middle of tying his tie around his neck when all of a sudden a floury bap hit him in the back of the head. This left his messy 'all over the place' hair and the back of his blazer sheet white. Ruairi and Steven immediately jerked their heads around and their tired eyes had to adjust to the bright light of the rising sun. Ruairi brought his his arm up to his face and covered his eyes with his blazer sleeve to block the sunlight. Ruairi suddenly got winded by what he thought was a brick hitting his gut and he fell to his knees coughing and spitting on the ice cold ground.

'What the hell was that!' Ruairi said barely getting his words through the torrent of coughs. 'Don't get up, just stay down and don't move' Steve said calmly. 'Why the hell should I?' Ruairi said pulling himself to his feet in order to find out what happened to him.

He regretted that move for the rest of his life. Jack Doherty and his three thugs were standing over him with and they had broadening sneers on their cold, hard faces. Ruairi's determined face went to a helpless one within seconds, he was reduced to nothing.

'You should have listened to your mate' Jack said with an intimidating grin on his face. 'Why the hell should I?' Jack imitated Ruairi's voice in a girly manner attempting to slag him off and look cool in front of his thug friends.

Ruairi looked to Steven for help but Steven stood there waiting for the worst to happen. He couldn't understand why this was happening, when it came to Jack Doherty Steven always stood up for him and fought for him. But now he was having nothing to do with him he may just be completely fed up and realised that fighting Ruairi's battles for him will solve nothing or he just doesn't feel like getting his hands dirty today.

'S-Steven hel......' Ruairi didn't even get to finish his sentence before Jack and his thugs started laying into him.

Ruairi was barely able to put up a fight, Jack was four years older than him, he had just started fourth year and chose one of the new first years to bully. Ruairi was his unlucky victim. Jack had the height and weight advantage over him along with his two thugs which made it hard for Ruairi to even breath every time they punched him and jumped on top of him. Steven stood there watching with half closed eyes and his arms folded, at one point during this blood bath he took out his phone and started texting random girls. Ruairi's hope that Steven would jump in for him was gone, he was now starting to think that Steven had set him up and that he was in on this the whole time. By about seven minutes into the massacre Ruairi had stopped even attempting to struggle because there was no use. Jack and his two thugs stopped and hopped up revealing that Ruairi had a broken nose, a busted lip, half of his face was covered in scarlet red blood, his black blazer was covered in blood along with his shirt and last of all he had a broken arm from when Jack had landed on him the wrong way.

'You should probably ring an ambulance' Jack said to Steven with a shaking voice realising that he had gone too far by accidentally breaking Ruairi's arm. 'I already did five minutes ago' Steven said his voice monotonous and calm, 'if I were you I'd get to school before they get here and start asking questions.'

Jack didn't even need to say anything back to Steven because he was off faster than a bullet train but not towards the school gates, back to his house, his two thugs trailing behind after him crapping themselves with fear off expulsion or even a criminal record for being charged with assault. Minutes later the ambulance arrived and put the unconscious Ruairi on a stretcher and they moved him into the back of the ambulance. Steven was questioned by the paramedics and he gave somewhat of a false account of the events that had taken place. He told them that he tried to do everything he could but he wasn't strong enough to fight them and protect Ruairi. Steven ended up travelling in the back of the van with Ruairi heading towards the hospital texting someone on his phone with a wide, happy grin on his face.
