I've been in the fandom since 2007, and I remember how many Deidara fans were there around that time (especially fangirls). It seemed like he had quite the hype at the time of his debut (at least his anime debut which was also in 2007). And later he's been overshadowed by other characters.

I've also used to run into Naruto-related stuff before I started reading/watching it, and I was under the impression that Gaara was very popular, along with Naruto and Sasuke, but you don't see much love shown for him nowadays.

Those who's been in this fandom for long, have you ever noticed something like this? Characters that used to be popular becoming much less so? Now I know there are still fans of both Deidara and Gaara, but the point is, you don't see much talking about them, hyping them etc.

Yeah; Gaara was really popular as i recall (esp. fangirls); i wonder what happened to them.

And compared to part 1; characters like Lee and Neji became less popular most likely related to their screentime.

Itachi fanboys are still around, but they were way too crowded as i recall.

I mean, look at who are popular in this season: Minato, Itachi, Obito, Hashirama, Madara. Everyone is talking about them.

Several years ago, it was different. Some characters, like Itachi, never lose their popularity, and some, like Deidara, were only hyped at their debut. I want to ask fandom veterans about this second kind of characters.

I bet they grew up. Literally, I mean, if they were 12-14 back then, they must be in their late teens by now, or so.

Exactly this... i also remember when Gaara became the 'Nice' guy alot of people were complaining about his new attitude.
Part II ruined alot of awesome characters but then again it also brought some awesome characters as well.

also because they don't get screentime I guess. characters like Lee and Neji could also become hits. I haven't been here much but I assume Jiraiya was a big thing in the past as well (although he's still universally loved).

also, kishi has this annoying thing of sacrificing characters to hype others (itachi in particular)

Yeah it's probably what happened to them; the reason why people like a character matters; if they were pre-teens who are stereotypically "fangirling" mostly; they most likely abandon the fandom when they grow up.

Or power levels is one of the reasons people like characters (sadly); Itachi, Sasuke, Madara, Obito, Minato and Hashirama are strong at current state; that's why they are really popular now. In part 1; characters like Lee or Neji had a good stand point in powers; now they become "fodders" as some would say and their paneltime is/was non-existent; that's why their popularity decreased (they are both my faves though).

I liked Gaara being a nice guy at the end of part 1...He is one of my faves but he is d*ckriding Naruto and it is annoying.

Part 2 brought some characters and they were great (like akatsuki); but even their depths is not seen much and things mostly focused on Uchiha; i sometimes think Kishi thinks than Uchiha is his greatest creation.

I remember when everyone had their hands all over Kisame. Tailless Tailed Beast, you say? Well, he did live up to his name, as he was the very last grunt besides Zetsu to perish.

Don't worry, I bet we'll see him doing evil stuff in the future. Besides, he's that kind of a villain who likes observing, he's a scientist after all.

Judging by power levels alone is just as sad as judging only by looks :|

By the way, is it just me, or are typical fangirls are very uncommon right now? I mean, those who squeal about how hot a character is? Did they all grow up and no new ones appeared?

I tend to believe they are stil existing somewhere; but thye are probably in different parts of internet; the amounts and variations of sites increased; people who are interested in certain aspects of Naruto looking are spending time in related platforms.

Only people who fans seem to have dimished are Jman, Sasori, 3rd Hokage and Neji. Deidara and Orochimaru fanbase is at a high right about now.
