Not sure if this has been done before, but here goes. In this thread we'll discuss the characters that should by all logical rights be dead by now but are alive solely because of plot. This is delving back all the way to part 1 mind you, not just the current arc. Now before this turns into a flamewar and a cluster**** of misinterpretation I think I need to clarify what i mean by "alive solely because of plot".
The first example that comes to mind for me is Gaara, and before anyone jumps to conclusions no I don't mean when Shukaku was extracted and no I don't mean his fight with Lee. While both of those could arguably have been plot with the asspull resurrection jutsu and being trolled by sand clone substitution respectively, a far more glaring example exists. In Gaara/Lee's fight against Kimimaro, both of them should have been by all rights dead and very dead at that. Kimimaro died literally about 10 seconds away from killing them both, but because of a vein attempt at plot-induced suspense, he died of his illness on the spot.
I feel like I need to point this out as well, this is about characters that should've died, not could've. Example: there is nothing in the world that would've saved a completely exhausted Sasuke from being skewered by Itachi's totsuka a split second after he sealed Orochimaru, but obviously he had no intention of killing Sasuke in the first place, least of all if it meant sealing him and losing any access at all to his eyes, even if he had actually been trying to take them.
On that note however, there does exist a glaring instance where Sasuke should've died and I'm sure many of you already know what I'm referring to. In his fight with Deidara he should've died. He didn't have anything close to the chakra or the speed/time to summon manda to save himself as the explosion was literally already occurring nearly 3 meters away from him. Hell he didn't even have the chakra to keep his sharingan active, which is the only thing that would've given any credence to Sasuke being able to react in time.
Before it even gets said or the accusations start getting thrown, this about discussing blatant examples of characters living past their due date for no logical reason, this is not about trying to make an argument for or trying to rant and whine at other posters for trying to make a case for why their least favorite characters should be dead. This is about reasonable arguments, conclusions and facts, not about slander and crying "butthurt" over anything you read and dislike. And no, being part of the main cast or playing a pivotal role needed to further the story is not a legitimate reason for why a character should still be alive, this is purely looking at it from the perspective of the Naruto world not the story.
State your examples, make your case, support your evidence... discuss.
