Background
Sometimes refered to as "the God of Shinobi" he was the Leaf Village's 3rd Hokage and the head of the Sarutobi clan. He was part of Team Tobirama along with Homura Mitokado and Koharu Utatane(you may know them as the village elders) under the leadership of the Second Hokage. Apparently he was also trained by the First Hokage too. Hiruzen would later become the teacher of the Legendary Sannin Tsunade, Jiraiya, and Orochimaru. While once a close friend of Danzo Shimura during their early childhood, Hiruzen was always one step ahead of Danzo which is why Danzo made him his rival. During the First Shinobi World War, Team Tobirama along with Danzō, Kagami Uchiha and Torifu Akimichi were cornered by the enemy ninja from the hidden cloud. Everyone on the team that day knew someone would have to volunteer to be a decoy, and their was no hope of surviving. Hiruzen volunteered to be the decoy, followed by Danzo who was terrified. But Tobirama however, chose to be the decoy instead, but before leaving he appointed Hiruzen as the Third Hokage.
Tobirama to Hiruzen:"Saru, you must protect those who have faith in you and who love the village, and train up to those to whom you can entrust the next generation… from tomorrow, you will be the Hokage…!"
Later in his life, when Hiruzen became the teacher of Jiraiya, Orochimaru, and Tsunade, who would later be given the title Sannin. Hiruzen married Biwako and became the father of two children, Asuma Sarutobi and one who has yet to be seen in the series. This unnamed child would later give Hiruzen a grandson, Konohamaru Sarutobi. While Orochimaru was his student, Hiruzen came to appreciate Orochimaru's natural talent, and often told Jiraiya to be more like him. He also recognized an inner lust for power within Orochimaru, and tried to steer his student away from these personality traits. After serving as Hokage for many years, Hiruzen started looking for a successor to the title. Although he really wanted to give the title to Orochimaru, he knew Orochimaru would only be Hokage to gain power. His first choice was Jiraiya, but due to Jiraiya's journeys, Hiruzen instead passed on the role of Hokage to one of Jiraiya's pupils, Minato Namikaze.
Knowing very well the dangers Kushina would face at childbirth (because the 9tails seal weakens) he sent his wife Biwako and a few ANBU for security to give birth in a secured location on the outskirts of the village. However, Tobi managed to track them down and release Kurama to order it to attack the Hidden Leaf. He never knew of Tobi's involvement yet he knew Kushina's seal didn't simply "fail". While Minato faced Tobi, Hiruzen lead Konoha to combat Kurama. He would then arrive to the scene when Minato decided to seal Kurama into his own son. The outcome of this battle forced Hiruzen to resume the role of active Hokage. He decided that the orphaned Naruto would be safe by keeping the identity of his father a secret thinking it best to give the young boy his mother's last name instead of his father's.
After resuming his position, Hiruzen began investigating several disappearances in the Leaf village. In his research he found Orochimaru to be the one responsible. Orochimaru was using those that he kidnapped as test subjects in his mission to become immortal, Orochimaru allowed his former master a chance to kill him. In the end Hiruzen was unable to bring himself to kill his former student, and Orochimaru escaped.
Hiruzen was one of four Leaf elders involved in the massacre of the Uchiha clan. The clan plotted to rebel against the village for being blamed for Kurama's attack. Hiruzen tried to find a peaceful alternative, but negotiations couldn't be reached. Itachi Uchiha was then ordered to wipe out the Uchiha. Itachi wasn't able to kill his brother, Sasuke Uchiha, and before leaving the village, pleaded with Hiruzen to protect his brother to which Hiruzen accepted and promised Itachi to keep Sasuke safe.

Abilities
Hiruzen was one of the most powerful shinobi in history. He was so powerful that he was admired as the God of Shinobi in his prime and he was said to be the strongest Hokage that Leaf ever had. Even in his old age, he was also the strongest of all the five Kage at the time of his death. Enma commented on his battle with Orochimaru, saying that it was "miserable" compared to his prime, even though he had clearly been able to hold his own against Orochimaru and two former Hokage without losing his composure. Even in his old age, he had considerably strong chakra, creating such a strong feeling in the air when he was around. He was also the longest living and longest reigning Hokage. So it makes sense how he got so strong.
Ninjutsu & Taijutsu
Hiruzen was also given the nickname "The Professor" because he knew so many justu and was highly skilled in using them. He actually knew every jutsu that the Leaf has ever had
. He also created alot of his own techniques, one of which was the Shuriken Shadow Clone Technique. With this technique, he could create a thousand clones of a single thrown shuriken in an instant to overwhelm the opponent with the extreme difficultly in evading them all. This method also meant that he didn't have stock up on a lot of shuriken. To watch over the village, he used the Telescope Technique, allowing him to observe others through his crystal ball over long distances. Even though his chakra wasn't as strong when he was old, he was still very smart in using it. As for taijutsu, Hiruzen displayed a very high level of it in old age. He was able to counter Tobirama and Hashirama in close combat, despite them being in their prime in the Summoning: Impure World Reincarnation. He was able to lay an explosive tag on both of their legs without them or Orochimaru knowing. After he summoned Enma, he could break Hashirama's Wood Release branches with ease, which is insane. Even when he lost his sight from the genjutsu Bringer of Darkness Technique, he was still able defend himself from Hashirama's and Tobirama's attacks, blocking all their attacks and preparing for his Dead Demon Consuming Seal. After sealing both of the former Hokage, he faced Orochimaru head on. Even though he sealed parts of his soul away in the Death God, on top of fighting for a very long time before he fought Orochimaru one on one, he effortlessly disarmed him of his sword.

Earth Release: Earth Flow River created a river of mud beneath the opponent to throw them off balance, and he could use the mud with Earth Release: Earth Dragon Bullet, which creates a dragon's head that launches mud balls at an opponent. He had also been shown to be adept in combining elemental techniques, as seen when he ignited the mud ball projectiles with Fire Release: Fire Dragon Bullet, creating a stream of lava that can melt nearly anything. Earth Release: Earth-Style Wall allowed Hiruzen to spit a stream of mud that solidifies into a protective shield.

Summoning Technique
Hiruzen's summon was the monkey king, Enma. Enma is capable of using Transformation: Adamantine Staff, which allows him to turn into a large, extendible staff that is as hard as adamantine, though despite its hardness, Enma has said that Orochimaru's Kusanagi sword can cut him. He can even push Kurama out of the village rather easily. He can also produce various body parts, such as eyes or arms, from the staff. Additionally, Enma can still move on his own in the staff form, allowing him to return to Hiruzen. Enma can even clone himself in his staff form, turning him into any number of smaller staffs that he uses for Adamantine Prison Wall, a move that can even protect against Hashirama Senju's Wood Release techniques. Outside of this, he himself is physically very strong, easily manhandling Hashirama and Tobirama Senju in brief hand-to-hand combat when they tried to keep him from transforming. He also shows knowledge of various techniques and their effects or drawbacks.

The Legacy of Hiruzen Sarutobi
After Hiruzen died, Tsunade noticed that the village has produced some very fine and determined shinobi under Hiruzen's leadership, especially when she saw Rock Lee's determination to go through with a life risking operation. She saw her sensei as an outstanding Hokage. Tsunade was so proud of her master that she is following Hiruzen's principles during her time as a Hokage.
In Part 2 Asuma said that Hiruzen thought that protecting the village's youngsters and who were to become the village's future ninja and people was the most important thing. When Danzo was killed by Sasuke, the former asked with his last breath what he was to Hiruzen. The Fourth Raikage proposed his death may have been the result of a secret plot of Danzo Shimura with the Akatsuki, more precisely Orochimaru who at the time was no longer a member of the organization. During Kakashi's encounter with his former pupil, he remembers Hiruzen's resolution in killing Orochimaru and states that he finally understood how the Third felt.
