"Hmm... who's next, Ren?" The Shinigami looked at the young man, speaking in a raspy voice. He wore a coat and goggles over his skeletal body, has red hair, and wore a bone guitar on his back. Ren seemed to ignore the Shinigami. He was working; talking to an invisible man would seem strange at a minimum. Ren opened his briefcase and took out a red notebook with writing on the cover. It seemed to be written in a language beyond the understanding of humans, though he knew very well what it said. He opened the note and wrote a paragraph entry. He then put the notebook away, and continued with his work. He worked through an uneventful day, and headed home to his Manhattan apartment. He took out his Metro Card, swiped it, and boarded the 4 train. The train was empty; it was only Ren and the Shinigami.
"... I think we're fine," Ren said finally.
"Good. Very good," the Shinigami spoke.
"Who is next?"
"Isn't that your decision?" The Shinigami gave him a "funny" look. If you can call a Shinigami "funny," that is.
"I guess you're right. The next will be a woman... Yes, a woman. I fancy she will be young. A doctor. She will be murdered by a serial killer after she cuts herself and sprinkles her blood on to a black rose."
"You scare me when you do that."
"Do what?"
"You just go off giving random pieces of information to form a fictional image and find a real likeness. Then the rose. Why a black rose?"
"... Fine. I'll explain. I am a simple man. Of simple tastes. I enjoy doing simple things in a simple manner. This is no different. Now that we're on the topic... I want to make a deal with you, Shinigami."
"What do you want?" He stared at the mortal with contempt; as if he, a Shinigami, felt that this methodical way of killing was either wrong, or he wished that during his lifetime he had thought of it himself.
"I want two things. The first... is your eyes."
"Of course. Consider it done. You know the price. And the other?"
"The other... is how I can become a Shinigami when I die."
"A Shinigami, eh? Thinking of joining us? There is just one thing you need to do: you need to kill 10,000 people in your human lifetime. It doesn't matter how you do it, just do it."
"I figured something along those lines. Now, a victim..."
A lady in her thirties stepped on to the train. She was tall and thin, and wore a doctor's ID around her neck. At the next stop, Ren got off the train, dropping a piece of paper onto the floor. Twelve stops later, the woman, identified as Sharon Calick, is found dead, gutted by a known serial killer on the loose. She was holding a black rose sprinkled in her blood, and a note inscribed on black paper with this scribbled on it:
Basically, I want to show you who Ren, the mysterious man from the Pilot chapter, is. He is nothing like Light. He kills for the simple joy of it. This character may appeal to some, to others it may not. As for the Shinigami, you may be able to guess his cards. Also, you may notice that she was holding the piece of note that killed her, and that the note was one of the rarer red noted.

Sharon Calick
Killed by Serial Killer during PM rush hour on the 4 Train to Grand central terminal. She will cut herself, and sprinkle the blood on a black rose that she will hold in her hand as the serial killer cuts her body open. Prior to her death, she will find a black piece of paper crumpled up on the floor, pick it up, and wrap it around her rose.
