its a mastering art subtly. the clipping isnt like if the levels were peaking from bad mixing imo, it would be more frequent throughout the tracks and on more tracks. like theres one super kind of bare track, like the fourth or fifth and the level peaks are scripted to give it a roughness, analog wave type feel. and the fluxuiation you are hearing are the eq compressors kicking in and out, makes it more trippy, its a classic trip-hop technic. like when that trumpet hits the highest point it breaks into a peak to distort the tone or when the raindrops fall, sounds cool to me.
this mixtape is just drenched in gospel music. i see why he wanted to be on Ultra Light Beams on TLOP, its straight gospel but kind of trippy and wacky and motivational. i still feel like he uses the mixtape excuse for the lack of theme focus that an album would have. even still i feel like this is what ASAP Rocky's last album was trying to be like or Chance took the concept and made it better.
his flow is murder, not necessarily the words but the way he approaches the beat. the instrumentals are good, his voice is weird and raspy, he definitely sings better imo than any other huge rapper-singer thing, happening in the mainstream. he's still more style than substance which isnt bad since its a mixtape..he has swag though in his music like most indie artists and he also uses his features well imo. the only thing I feel like his song themes are still cliche, like musically he thinks outside of the box with his decisions and choices but the themes that his songs are about are still cliche and lack the same style. just hope he doesnt sell out before dropping an album independently.
