Cannon or no?

I know everyone is very excited about Road to Ninja. But will we, member of the base, count it as cannon? I mean obviously most will be brushed aside, as it is set in an alternate timeline. But Kishimoto did write the story for it, so where do we draw the line between cannon and noncannon? Thoughts?

Here's a link to the wiki page for it. It's strange actually, on Kishimoto's wiki it says he was "responsible for the story and the characters' designs". But in the wiki for the movie it only says, "Series creator Masashi Kishimoto has supervised the movie". So anyways the links to both are below.

That's a good question. I doubt you can count it as canon because it isn't a part of the manga, so no it isn't really canon.

Non-canon. He was given more influence than normal on this movie, but his name being on it isn't enough to make it canon. It isn't even consistent with the main series. I think the whole point of movies like this is to play around and not let things like consistency with the main series get in the way. That's what gave them the freedom to have Naruto in this scenario they thought it would be fun to put him in. I don't think there is even a "line" to look for when trying to define what's canon. When it is, it'll be obvious and the makers will be explicit about it.

A legitimate canon movie is, I think, a movie that they might put out that is meant to finish a series. For example, the Pokemon series was supposed to have a run of about 1 1/2 or 2 years, and then have a theatrical Final Episode. Events in the main series even led up to the movie, and in the movie, events in the series were reiterated. They even made a trailer for it showing what looked like a grown-up Misty. But then the series was renewed and they redid a ton of things in the movie to make it less 'final'. That kind of thing if they did something similar for Naruto would be canon.

Sure it's canon Kishi made it, but it does not matter because as you mentioned it takes place in an alternate reality, so anything that happens wouldn't have any effect on the Nv we know now.
