It was the situations and how they were used. In the old fights there was a sense of danger. Big moves were draining and if you missed the opportunity would usually end up costing a ninja the fight or their lives. Loosing your head or half your body meant death or at least meant you couldn't fight anyomre.
Now you can blow up heads, cut bodies in half, snatch eyes and pop them in your head and use their power like it's been yours to begin with.
The characters have become a lot like those in Bleach where you just don't feel that their lives are at stake even when they say they are. Naruto got burned to a crisp only to find out it didn't happen. Obito should have been dead 3 times already. Gai should be dead.
The power levels are so high for the Protagonists that they litereally are the only ones who pose a threat to each other. It's not just the power ups it's how their is no longer a real sense of danger.
