i was wondering how come the shadow clones made during the pain fight that acted as back-up didnt run out of sage chakra before naruto could use them to replenish his sage mode and then i realized it's cuz they stayed still. so theoritically speaking, couldnt someone be in sage mode forever if a frog attaches to their shoulder and remains still and keeps on gathering nature energy?

yea, maybe. But you saw that when Jiraiya had those toads on him his sage mode ran out.

thats because they kept talking to each other. their lips were moving. they need to be completely still

gathering nature energy is not so easy as it sounds, whe you use/gather it too much youll get exhausted (obviously, or else sage mode would pwn all other modes in terms of duration)

No because the nature chakra mixed with your own, they are in balance so when you use a jutsu you still also your your own chakra, not the same amount you would use without SM but still... so in the end you would go out of SM due to running out of chakra.
If you do not use any jutsu and stuff then yea you could stay like that forever...
