Can the Rinnegan be inherited?

SO6P's elder son clearly had some sort of dojutsu, but it wasn't the same as the Rinnegan either. So can the Rinnegan be passed down? And if an Uchiha activated the Rinnegan, would it be passed down at all?

I guess you can say it can be inherited in a weaker form that needs to be enchanced and completed: the sharingan.

I think the elder son had the first Eternal Mangekyou Sharingan. So, perhaps it does get passed down, but in a watered down form. But there is no real way of knowing.

The Uchiha, as descendants of the Older Brother, inherited the eyes of the Sage. By this, it is plausible for the Uchiha Sharingan to progress to Rinnegan - Madara said to have awakened his Rinnegan shortly before his death.

The Uzumaki are distant relatives of the Senju. The Senju, as descendants of the Younger Son, were chosen as the successor of the Sage of Six Paths - Incarnates of the Sage of Six Paths, an Uzumaki(Nagato) in this case, may naturally appear in this lineage.

The abilities of both Rinnegan may essentially be the same. The difference lies in that while the Older Brother and his descendants stand to inherit the eyes and its abilities, the Younger Brother and his descendants, as successors, give rise to incarnates - inheriting both the eyes and the body.

As you can see, both quotes speak about Nagato, and they both speak about the same thing. Nagato was that incarnate that was supposed to either calm the world or destroy it, but he turned out to be the one who destroys it.

Now, I'm not saying that every Senju/Uzumaki has the ability to awaken the Rinnegan – all I'm saying is that the Senju/Uzumaki have the chance to possess the Rinnegan due to them being the descendants of the Younger Son and the successors of the Sage. They were chosen by the Sage to be his successors, so it should be logical for the 'incarnate' to be a descendant of the Younger Son(Senju/Uzumaki/Nagato).
