Not just for the sake of the village, it was for the sake of his clan too. Before Shishui died, he counted on itachi to protect the village and the honor of uchiha as the greatest clan in konoha. Unfortunately the uchiha coup de 'etat was at its final stage already and itachi's dad was the mastermind. Only the higher ups knew about the uchiha coup de 'etat therefore he wanted the village and sasuke to believe that uchiha is the greatest clan in konoha by playing the villain role. By annihilated his clan, he could save the village and protect the name of uchiha as shishui's wished. He didn't kill sasuke for the same reason why minato sealed kyuubi inside naruto. He wanted sasuke to be the hero of the leaf by killing the one who annihilated his own clan. Yeah, itachi had the hardest time.
