But...

How can a genius be blackmailed by Danzo? Does that make Danzo a genius too? And sorry, the reason 'Itachi listened to Danzo because else Danzo would have killed everyone, and his little brother Sasuke too' is ridiculous... This is complete bullshit. That really is a bad plot. Not believable at all. Itachi could do so much, gets so much hype and wank, but he couldn't do anything about Danzo or about some Uchiha-fodders?

I think the manga (that I like a lot), failed at this part a little. Seems like Danzo owned Itachi big time in the past.

If you want to think of it that way, yes. Amoral or not, everything Danzo did, he did for the sake of the village. Not only was it insinuated that the clan had a hand in Kurama's attack on Konoha (they technically weren't wrong, not to mention no Uchiha members were present during that night), but they were isolated and put on surveillance. Was it so wrong to think that they would eventually start a coup d'etat against the village who ostracized them. In Danzo's eyes, he was preventing the inevitable.

I think you are misinterpreting a lot of the terms. First Academic geniuses like scientists can be blackmailed by criminals . Second, The genius in Itachi's case was in reference to his Ninjutsu skills and completing his training in a short time, perhaps not in terms of his cunning. So in a sense you are asking why did the orange juice come from an apple
