I mean Madara was old and beyond recognition(its even confusing some people in narutobase whether he is madara or not when they saw him in 602) when tobi met him as a kid to recognize a young and healthy madara when kabuto ressurected him

Madara is the most well known uchiha, so its not that far fetched of an idea to assume that obito knows his own ancestors ----->

and i think people mistook old madara for nagato because of how he looked after he over used his jutsu to bring everyone back to life.

If only there were a gigantic stone statue of Madara that showed what he looked like somewhere that the people of Konoha would be able to visit. If only some kind of recent events, like a recent fight had occured near that statue that Tobi or one of his associates was able to witness and "record". That would have made identifying Madara much easier. (/SARCASM)
