He was the one who created ninjutsu, and it is said that he can use any techniques (fire, water, wind) etc. He also defeated the Ten tails and sealed it inside himself - afte rhe did that, he became beyond human. He also had two sons, one Uchiha and one Senju.
Sage choosed the Younger son because he thought he would follow the destiny and bring the bijuu's to the right path, but that didnt happen because the Elder son got mad.

the moon, and had 2 sons somewhere in the mix. Elder son is ancestor of Uchiha, younger son ancestor of Senju. He chose the younger to take his place when he died creating an endless cycle of hatred between the clans. etc. etc.

Basically during the VERY distant past the world is in constant conflict, and so arrives the So6P. With the Rinnegan he basically introduces the concept of Ninjutsu and teaches people about it bringing about the rise of Shinobi. At some point in time he seals the Ten Tailed beast in him and the body of the ten tails is trapped in the moon (he used chibaku tensei). So he had two sons and on his deathbed he left the younger son who got the sage's strength of body (like how Naruto is super stamina) to be his hier. The younger son was chosen as he thought love brings peace. and it made the older son who recieved the eyes of the Sage (basically sharingan) jealous. He though strength brought peace. The younger son's decendents became Senju, the older son's Uchiha. That is basically it.
