I was lurking through some [VS] threads while extremely bored, and some users came up with an argument that Orochimaru can't survive decapitation. In my honest opinion, I say that's a highly debatable topic and here's why; in Orochimaru's earlier confrontation with Kabuto, he attacked him with chakra scalpels. Now, the properties of the chakra scalpels WITHOUT penetrating the skin are the following;

Now, Orochimaru was attacked by these scalpels in the following areas; The neck, and the upper chest area. The scalpels cut muscles, nerves, arteries etc. But despite all of this, Orochimaru managed to use his Rebirth jutsu despite having his blood vessels, and nerves destroyed.

So The question is, can Orochimaru survive decapitation?

It's because of what happened with Kabuto that I do believe he can survive decapitation. Plus, Oro used Oral Rebirth almost immediately after he got torn in 2 by 4Tail Naruto. I imagine he can do the same with his head with ease.

No. With the head gone, the body shuts down, so no jutsu, including Oro's techs to revive himself, would be able to activated.

Are you seriously pulling this card? Orochimaru tanked a stab the Totsuka blade, right in the middle of his body; pure impalement. Now, mind you, if you recieve a significant amount of damage to any of your vertebrae beyond the 7th one, this causes paraplegia. But he seemingly laughed it off.

How can he use oral rebirth without his head?

Orochimaru only needs to be alive to use oral rebirth decapitation doesn't kill him its already been proven. He got sliced up by sasuke and was still talking. He got split in half and acted like nothing happened the spinal cord is directly attached to the brain and can cause massive brain trauma if severed.

Obviously hasn't been proven, but I don't see why not. The guy who devoted his life to immortality, who was able to create a whole new dimension, can't find a way to overcome decapitation? If he can do this,

I think he can survive through decapitation. Not much proof, but it's good enough for me.

Did the Hidan's body fall after he got decapitated? I can't remember.

Really not sure on that one but Orochimaru seems to make a habit out of "dying" and coming back. Oro should have been dead when Kabuto pretty much slit his throat and kept stabbing at him. I have a feeling that Orochimaru prepares Oral rebirth the moment before he's attacked. If that's the case (which might not be) then I think Orochimaru can use oral rebirth without a head.

If Tsunade can survive it & still walk headless , I don't see why not.

Yeah, his body wasn't able to move until Kakuzu reattached it.

TO everyone else: That's a good point, I hadn't considered the spinal cord thing, but does the spinal cord being severed kill you and shut down your body as instantly as decapitation does?

Ah, well that was gonna be one of my points so nvm. And if you're spinal cord is severed, like literally severed, you're dead. A shattered spinal cord will lead to negation of the pathways for neurons from the brain to travel through in order to send your body any kind of messages. Only if it's completely severed and shattered though, there are cases where people live through such a pain.

I say yes.
After his head roll, a new body pops out right from his neck.
