Focus has everything to do with it, the argument that I'm countering is that Amaterasu instantly ignites where the user is looking. I.E. If you're looking at that dot on that piece of paper then it's going to combust, that's the argument some people are making.

However, let's say that there is a table under the piece of paper. My first argument is that if you move the paper with the dot on it then Amaterasu should simply ignite the table since the focal point changed, a fireball should not be shot at the table simply because the paper with the dot was removed.

My second argument is that, if Amaterasu will ignite the dot on the piece of paper, then it should be impossible to move the piece of paper out of the way. You can't avoid something that's instant.

Thirdly, if you put your finger in front of the dot, Amaterasu shouldn't just turn into a fireball because it's focal point was blocked off... the finger is the new focal point, so it should combust. Alternatively, if Amaterasu was used before you covered the dot with your finger, then the dot should still combust regardless of the placement of your finger.

Except when Itachi used it against Sasuke, or when Sasuke used it against Ei.
I am not even denying the idea of focusing on a point. What you are forgetting that it depends upon the eye's line of sight. In ALL occasions or examples you have spoken of, the second another object occupies the point established in the line of sight, it would ignite in its place. What the eye cannot see it cannot ignite. You HAVE to consider this point on all the basis, as this is the actual point of confusion here. What the object is out of focus, and out of its line of sight, what would the eye ignite?

You have misunderstood Itachi's intentions then. He never wanted to kill Sasuke. Hell, he even made a hand-seal before using Amaterasu and kept his vision in Sasuke's Wake, as Amaterasu follows the eye's line of sight. In case of Ae, you HAVE to look at another factor; Ae pumped Bijuu level chakra into his V2 cloak to dodge Amaterasu. He has never done that on any occasion and side stepped it when it was just spawning. It all happened extremely quickly. Look at the Flame; it's exactly on the spot where Ae left his flickering image, only that it's a bit bigger then.

He kept it in Sasuke's wake because of focus problems, not because he wasn't trying to kill him. He was clearly trying to hurt sasuke, to draw orochimaru out. This is why after amaterasu hit sasuke and set him on fire, Itachi dried up the flames with his eye.

A also dodged amaterasu when it was a projectile, because it spawned out of focus. It wasn't on him, it was slightly in front of him. There are no signs it was actually touching him.

^ Your scenario could be right as well, but Itachi did use a handseal and kept the flames behind. Amaterasu spreads at a lightening pace if it's used off the bat on the target by focusing the eye. It would most certainly killed Sasuke had Itachi used it directly upon him. So this is another factor.

Remember the chakra factor for Ae's case. He pumped a hell lot of chakra into his cloak to side step. It could very well be manga's way of showing an early formation of Amaterasu in contrast to Ae's blinding speed. Amaterasu had yet to latch itself completely onto his body when he side stepped.

Yeah, but the point is that Itachi had eye problems. He couldn't just focus right off the bat, trying to focus in on the high movement speed of sasuke was a b*tch. And sasuke began running before amaterasu was spawned. He was sprinting like crazy, hard for someone with extremely degenerated eyesight to pinpoint his focus on. Just look at my sig below. Itachi's focus is gradually drawing in.
I don't really know what hand seal you're talking about...I tried finding it in the manga...are you talking about when he made the katon fireball technique?
The flames are just spawning continuously, creating a tail effect, as Itachi is moving his focus closer and closer to Sasuke.

To me the more rational explanation is that it spawned a short distance in front of him. This all adds up with Sasuke's eyesight problems. Otherwise, why would kishi show that he misjudged his focus and knocked over the glass earlier? You're also having to make the assumption that amaterasu has a time delay before it sticks, which isn't mentioned in the manga, and is unnecessary to assume when you realize it just spawned short of raikage.
You're right though; Raikage still required a lot of speed/fast reaction to avoid amaterasu though, because it was probably spawned a few inches front of him.

If it had actually spawned on Raikage though, he'd be screwed.

^ You do have a point. It could very well be the screwed up eye sight as Itachi's was literally ****ed at that time. Sasuke too was experiencing the effects.
