Nagato couldn't switch from sharingan to rinnegan because Madara transplanted his rinnegan into Nagato, Madara can switch because his sharingan evolved into the rinnegan so his was natural and that's why he is able to do so. I'm not sure if he can switch now but I don't see why he can't.

He can but there's no point because Rinnegan is Far superior to Sharingan plus he can use Susanoo with Rinnegan activated so there's no point.

If he can do it with a fake body and eyes why would he be restricted with a more able body and his real eyes!!!!? If I had to guess: Yes and no. What I mean by that is that, like most Uchiha's, he probably can only "switch" back to his Sharingan after using too much chakra and not being able to maintain his Rinnegan any longer.

As to why Nagato couldn't switch back to Madara's Sharingan: Like Kakashi, he most likely just couldn't, or because they 1. weren't his eyes, and 2. he didn't have any knowledge of an other ocular form of his eyes; he probably thought that the only form his eyes could stay in was the Rinnegan.
